I was hoping for an actor of color, but at least they didn’t go with a f***ing teenager or something.

I couldn’t agree more. I was taking their comments to mean they were going in a different direction this time, and was hoping for something more than another old, white dude. Does this mean the Doctor’s a Republican? Maybe I’m just bitter it wasn’t Helen Mirran.

Agreed. I think the younger doctors, as great as they were, lacked the appearance of maturity that a 950 year old would have.

I think what Smith brought to the role was the ability to play the soul of an older Time Lord in the younger body. He really took a page from Troughton.

He’ll do a great job, my only worry is that non die hard fans may drift away from an older doctor, certainly the last two doctors have had the pin up aspect which i’m afraid Capaldi does not.

Hmm, they went for an older guy. Not what I expected, but defintely a good choice. For a moment there I thought he was going to end up as a teenager or something.

And at least they went for someone who is largely unknown. As soon as they choose an actor who I have heard of, to play The Doctor. Then we’ll probably have a problem.

Why would it be a problem if the actor is someone you’ve heard of? Maybe you haven’t heard of Capaldi but he has quite an extensive resume as an actor: Prime Suspect, Franz Kafka’s It’s A Wonderful Life, House of 9, In the Loop, World War Z, Foyle’s War – just to name a few award winning performances. Christopher Eccleston was well known before he became the Doctor, as was the very 1st & 2nd Doctors William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton. My personal choice for the 12th would have been Helen Mirren, but I think I will be very pleased with Peter’s take on the Time Lord.

Capaldi is very well known indeed in the UK.

David Tennant and Eccleston were well known and Matt Smith was certainly not unknown.

I am quite happy that the show is going into this new direction. There are some interesting things to consider now…

    1) We’ve had younger Doctors (who got progressively younger) who were reacting at such a breakneck speed they almost seemed as if they were bouncing off of walls instead of reasoning their way out of a situation. While Matt Smith’s Doctor was enjoyable, he almost made me feel exhausted after every episode.

    2) With an older Doctor, this could have a lot of fun in is relationship with young Clara. It will be interesting to see how this now plays out.

    3) I can’t think of a better way to usher in the next 50 years than by going with an actor who is approximately the same age as William Hartnell was when the series premiered in 1963.

I have an Audioboo at https://audioboo.fm/boos/1534338-peter-capaldi if anyone is interested in hearing what my thoughts are on the subject.
