This past spring, Boxee changed it’s focus from the set-top boxes people had become fond of to a new Cloud DVR service, on a slow rollout plan to promote an unlimited online storage of your television broadcast recordings, for you to watch what you wanted when you wanted without having to worry about how much space was left on your device.
On July 3, reports from All Things D stated that Samsung announced it’s acquisition of Boxee, and while people were still getting used to that news, on July 5, Samsung announced that it would be shutting down Boxee and discontinuing that Cloud DVR service effective July 10.
Samsung will reportedly be including Boxee assets in future plans for their own hardware, so maybe Boxee will return in some new Samsung HD TVs next year, but for now, Apple TV and Roku have one less kid in the sandbox with them.
