While many fans will agree that Revenge of the Sith is the best of the prequel trilogy set in the Star Wars universe, does that mean it could or should be considered a work of art?
On prominent art critic thinks so. In her book Glittering Images, art critic and professor Camille Paglia calls Revenge of the Sith the greatest work of art in the last thirty years.
“The long finale of Revenge of the Sith has more inherent artistic value, emotional power and global impact than anything by the artists you name,” she tells Vice. “It’s because the art world has flat-lined and become an echo chamber of received opinion and toxic over-praise. It’s like the emperor’s new clothes — people are too intimidated to admit what they secretly think or what they might think with their blinders off.”
Her book traces the key moments in Western art from the Egyptians to modern times. She said when choosing something to represent the digital art section, she considered using Japanese anime but concluded that “it lacked the overwhelming operatic power and, yes, seriousness of Lucas’ Revenge of the Sith.”
So, do you agree or disagree?
John W. says
Sure it’s a piece of art… but that doesn’t make it good art. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. I can dance naked in the street covered in doggy-doo-doo and you could consider that performance art, but is it good art? Not so much.
