With Spider-Man about to get a big screen reboot, many of us may be wondering why the movie series started under director Sam Raimi and star Toby Maguire just didn’t continue.
Marvel exec Avi Arad says there’s a good reason for it–they didn’t have a strong enough idea for a fourth installment.
Arad tells Omelete no one involved could write a compelling enough story to justify the next installment and keep Raimi and Maguire under contract.
rad said they opted to go back to the beginning and dig into some of the early Peter Parker tales that were glossed over when Tobey Maguire’s version of Spidey quickly headed into adulthood.
“It wasn’t a time issue, it wasn’t like ‘It’s been 10 years, so time to do another one.’ As many of you know…we were working on what was called Spider-Man 4, and it was the same team,” he says. “The problem was, we didn’t have a story that was strong enough, and warranted making another movie. And Sam Raimi…just realized we don’t have a good reason to make another one. Between him and Tobey [Maguire] and the studio, we all went into it not feeling good about the next story… So we felt, particularly Sam [Raimi] that he’d already told his story, and it was with a heavy heart, because we’d been together 10 years.”

Seriously? Isn’t that like admitting that there are no talented writers in Hollywood and all they can do is keep starting over again and again?
And if they couldn’t come up with a strong enough story for Spidey 4, how am I supposed to believe they’ve come up with one for the reboot?
Ri-fracking-diculous.

Totally agree…from the trailers I’ve seen of the new Amazing Spider Man it looks just like the same thing from the Tobey Maguire version just with a few tweaks…gotta say from the looks of it…it looks boring.

I have NO problem with a reboot. Hoping we finally get a Spiderman movie that doesn’t suck.

We’ve had two…Spidey and Spidey 2

Well, at least Peter isn’t instantly out of college in the new film, which they screwed up before and always do.
