While the first season of Game of Thrones was fairly faithful to the best-selling fantasy series, HBO programming chief Michael Lombardo says that at some point, the series may depart from the novels.
“I don’t know where the show will end, as opposed to the books,” he told the Television Critics Association. “It would be fantastic to be able to say this show will go on for 10 years, and do every aspect of the books. I don’t know that will be the case. We’ll see, but we are doing this without any predetermined idea of the number of seasons.”
However, Lombardo says that he does realize the books have a passionate fanbase and that he wants to respect them.
“That is a relationship that we are very aware and respectful of,” he says.

… but to be expected. I don’t think it’s possible to keep the multi-person perspective of the books 3,4 and 5 in a TV adaptation, especially when most of the stuff is happening in parallel timelines anyway.
I just hope we don’t have to wait 6 more years till we get the next installment in print since GRRM will be a very busy guy adapting his books to TV.

the reason it is successful is because is does NOT depart from the books for the most part. Here’s goes HBO now trying to ruin something good by “Hollywoodizing” it. when are they going to understand? sheesh.

That’s one of the reasons why Legend of the Seeker is off the air (that and they kept changing the air days/time)!
Stick with what the author wrote or come up with your own damn story.
How many other book to movie transitions have been ruined by not following the story? Battlefield Earth – wow, just TERRIBLE. Dune – both versions pretty bad.

Oh well, I guess it is to be expected that the network would bastardize the books. Besides, the majority of viewers have not read/probably won’t read the books, so the network can get away with what it wants. The network will ignore the book purists… as they so often do.

This is an awful idea.

If they keep the writing strong like they have with ‘The Walking Dead’, then it’s okay that they detour from the source material. That just means that I DON’T know what’s going to happen and that prospect alone gives me cause for praise.
