Writer and producer Dean Devlin says that now that Stargate franchise has wound down on TV, he’s still interested in pursuing sequels to the original movie.
Devlin tells Gateworld that the movies were originally envisioned as a trilogy. But when the film spun-off into the television series, it was decided to not pursue movie sequels.
“We actually wrote it as a trilogy of movies, but we were never able to do parts two and three,” Devlin said. “So our hope is, now that the series is starting to wind down, that maybe it will be time to actually get to do parts two and three. We’re still hopeful that we’ll get to come back and tell the rest of that story.”
Devlin says the storyline for the movies could exist along since what we’ve seen on TV and be a parallel story that wouldn’t necessarily contradict the shows.
“I think it’ll change a little bit from our original idea since so many years have passed,” he said. “We wanted to explore the idea of how the Stargates were built originally, and where else in the universe they exist, and why they exist — and where else they exist on Earth. We had really planned out, as a trilogy of films, to allow this mythology to grow bigger and bigger.”

Parallel universes: Not confusing at all. 🙂

I’ve always been interested in what these guys had in mind for sequels and as much as I love the series(s) I really want to see sequels to the movies.

And I really want to see Stargate Universe continue. As long as “SyFy” controls things, nothing will happen.

@james SyFy doesn’t control the Stargate franchise. That product is the property of MGM. Stargate Universe was dropped mainly because MGM’s budget could no longer handle the cost. The studio is in financial difficulty of late and its future is yet to be determined.
As far as a future set of sequel-films based on the first original movie is concerned, I’d love to see it happen, but it won’t under the banner of MGM. Perhaps 20th Century Fox, Universal or some of the more independent film companies. or even Devlin’s own Electric Entertainment could pick up most of the early financing for such a much anticipated project.

I really hope Stargate can pull this off. I’d love to see it go on. And yes, the world of Stargate has a ton of unanswered questions! If this becomes profitable, which is very likely given the number of Stargate fans out there, they might just some-up Stargate Universe after the trilogy. It was nothing in comparison to the original SG-1 (that they should of just kept running instead of spin-offs) I admit, however I personally liked it. But like countless other TV series that I’ve grown to enjoy throughout the season(s) just to see dropped without no real ending, I know even the staff and producers were just as disappointed to see this happen. And as every good thing must come to an end, getting away from MGM’s partnership may be a good idea. Other entertainment company’s would be fools to say no. It still has “great potential”.
