In 2009, the record success of the anniversary limited series “Red Dwarf: Return to Earth” quickly spawned numerous rumors of a return of the quirky British scifi comedy, but they were merely rumors.
Until now.
In The Daily Mail Craig Charles, who played Dave Lister, the last human alive, has confirmed that Danny John-Jules as Cat and Chris Barrie, who played Rimmer are also coming back.
Filming is slated to start towards the end of 2011, and we all hope they manage to execute a rebirth as wonderful and diverse as the current Doctor Who series has done.

Red Dwarf on BBC America please.
Summer Brooks says
Seconded.
This may be a dumb question, but are Red Dwarf reruns airing anywhere in the US?
Arkle says
I heard about this at the Red Dwarf panel at Dragon*Con last year. I’m still squeeing.
Jon Trott says
You mean Danny John-Jules (The Cat) and Chris Barrie (Rimmer) are also involved?
What about Robert Llewellyn (Kryten) and Norman Lovett (Holly)?
I can’t wait ๐

As long as Back To Earth is not part of the continuity and we get something that continues from “The Only The Good…”
Alverant says
@Summer
Check your local PBS station. The one in Iowa still has it on Friday/Saturday nights before old Dr.Who and Red Green Show reruns.
@Jaysonc
Do you mean the ending that was part of the show or the alternate ending? I preferred the alternate ending myself where everyone knew how to say that long word but Rimmer.
For myself, I loved Red Dwarf but it jumped the shark when Ace returned and Rimmer left. Haven’t seen “Back To Earth” even though it’s been on my blu-ray shelf for too long. I’m worried the actors would be too old to return to their roles. If they’re going to return to the series, it should return to the core concept of “Five bums wandering around the universe looking for something to do.”
Jaysonc says
Alv, the ending that actually aired but the alternate ending was a hell of a lot funnier “Ships Mr. Kryten? I see no ships” was pitch perfect Rimmer. Again, “Back To Earth” just wasn’t funny and I’m hopeing it was just an anomaly and we get Red Dwarf back in full form. Oh and as for Rimmer becomeing Ace, I quite liked that because that means despite all the cowardace and weasel behavior he’s going to be a hero after all.
Ed from NH says
Nice, I’m looking forward to more as I’ve always loved the series.
Every episode is available on Netflix instant streaming, I’ve been watching the whole series in order lately which is better than catching the ocasional episode on PBS. Now if Netflix would add the BBC series The Prisoner to instant the world would be a perfect place, lol.

Seriously? The person who wrote this couldn’t be bothered to go to freakin’ IMDB and actually LOOK UP the actors’ names? Wow, that is lazy!
Still, I’d be willing to give more Red Dwarf a chance. I was a little disappointed with the 2009 show, but I’d at least watch a few episodes out of curiosity. If it turns out to be good, I’d be very happy.
Summer Brooks says
@Ashe, Actually, that was an editing error. Cutpasteitis. The “who played Rimmer” sentence fragment should have been a giveaway ๐
Fixed now.

absolutely LOVED the original series but the back to earth episode left me thinking ‘ehhhhh’. They need to step it up if it comes back for a full season
Alverant says
@Jaysonc I completely agree the alternate ending was better. As for Rimmer leaving, let me rephrase. Right after that episode, it jumped the shark. It was the last great episode of the series. Everything after that was between good and smeg. The rest of that season wasn’t that great and the last season was good for the most part, but moved away from the core concept of the series by restoring the entire crew. It took the series in a new direction and if that was a different series, it would have been better. I’m not sure how it could have been done, but it didn’t work out as well.
Jaysonc says
Alv, considering Red Dwarf had a very strong athiest bent, IE everything was man-made I didn’t have a problem with bringing the crew of the Red Dwarf back. If you want to get technical, the crew are really replicants and not human. What I didn’t like about series 8 was them being in prison because I would have preferred them to being on the run from Captain Holister aka Dennis the donut boy ๐
