Curious to know which classic “Doctor Who” stories will hit DVD this year?
Well, you can wonder no longer.
2|Entertain who releases the stories for the BBC has announced the stories that will be released for the rest of 2011. (Fans of the third Doctor will be happy).
Here’s what’s coming:
Feburary — The Mutants (Jon Pertwee)
March — The Ark (William Hartnell)
April — Mara Tales: Kinda, Snakedance (Peter Davison)
Scheduled but no release date:
Planet of the Spiders (Jon Pertwee)
Mannequin Mania — Spearhead from Space SE (re-release), Terror of the Autons (Jon Pertwee)
Frontios (Peter Davison)
Earthstory — The Gunfighers (William Hartnell), The Awakening (Peter Davison)
Paradise Towers (Sylvester McCoy)
The Solar System — Ambassadors of Death (Jon Pertwee), The Sunmakers (Tom Baker)
Day of the Daleks SE (Jon Pertwee)
Also releasing in the UK is a new three disc-box set that will upgrade several initial releases. Called the Revistitations 2, the set will see releases of “Robots of Death,” “Tomb of the Cybermen” and “The Three Doctors.”
All new to DVD releases will see a world-wide release date. It’s not known at this time how much color restoration will be done to “Ambassadors of Death.” It was reported a few weeks ago that the “Doctor Who” Restoration team was attempting to use the same process that restored color to “Planet of the Daleks” episode three on “Ambassadors.” But conflicting reports and board posts from members of the Restoration Team have fans curious as to how much of the story will be in color (several full episodes are in color, just not all seven).
The year will also see the full release of all stories from the Peter Davison era. Outside of the third Doctor, the fifth Doctor’s tenure is the most well represented in the releases.
American fans wondering if we’ll get releases of the Revisitations set also won’t find any answers yet. BBC America has not announced if they will re-release stories, though they are releasing the long-awaited American release of “The TV Movie” from the first Revisitations box set next month. Also, it’s likely that the American releases of various box sets will be broken up into separate releases. So, there is a question on whether we’ll get the new edition of “Spearhead from Space” or not (though the Restoration Team assures us that the upgrade is worth it).
Our news director will keep on top of all this (because, again, he loves “Doctor Who”) and bring you details as they become available.
Michael Falkner says
Great news, especially where I’m looking at watching what’s available from the first episode on. Fire up the Netflix!
Lee Hubbard says
Does this mean that Planet of the Spiders will be out in May or June? I have waited so long for that one.
Mitch from Omaha says
Lee – It means they haven’t announced it yet, other than 2011. And I am right there with you, I don’t know why they would hold back the final story from the Third Doctor for so long.
Michael Hickerson says
@Lee. Various message boards I browse seem to believe Planet of Spiders could come in May or June. A lot of it may depend on the release of series six onto DVD and Blu-Ray.
@Mitch. Well, I could go into my reasons why there are several other Pertwee stories I’d far rather see than the overrated Planet of Spiders…but I’ll just leave it at that. I’m surprised it took this long really since it’s one of the few Pertwee serials that requires a lot of restoration work to bring to DVD.

TERROR OF THE AUTONS?!? HELL YES!!!
Roger Delgado is still the best Master ever.
