We all knew it was coming.
For years, George Lucas has said he’d like to upgrade the “Star Wars” movies to 3-D.
And now he’s doing it.
According to Deadline, Lucas will make the news official later today at Star Wars Saga conversion. Industrial Light and Magic will oversee the project of converting the six films to 3-D and its expect that they will be released to theaters beginning in 2012.
Lucas will be starting at the beginning of the saga with a 3-D version of “The Phantom Menance” expected as the first release. (Dear heavens…3-D Jar-Jar….save us!)
“Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right. It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results. For ‘Star Wars’ we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience,” says ILM’s John Knoll, who will supervise the project.

Do. Not. Care.

I’m there…
I know, I know… I hate the “Enhanced” editions and I don’t care much for the Prequels and I’m tired of 3D Up-Convert.
But, with that being said, I’ll still see Star Wars in theaters if given the chance.
Andy says
Its mean to say, but I hope Georgie soon gets old enough not to do things like this.
Gazerbeam says
Where are we going, and why are we in this handbasket?
Michael Falkner says
Great. Now I have to listen to more people attempting poorly to explain how three movies completely ruined their childhoods.
Rather I have to tune more of those people out.
Thanks a lot, Lucasfilm.
Anne Gallagher says
Oh Good Grief! Of course he is going to do this.
tensaibaka says
wait wait wait….didn’t Lucas just feed us a couple of lines about not having enough money for the TV series, AND the original (non-special edition) trilogy conversion to Blu-Ray? Which is it Lucas? Did you lie to your faithful fans just so you too can jump on the 3D bandwagon????
Summer Brooks says
Note to self: record original Star Wars trilogy from laserdisc to DVD, and put laserdiscs in safe deposit box.
tensaibaka says
If you don’t mind shelling out a little bit of money for the special edition trilogy, they come with an original trilogy DVD set as well.

I picked mine up here in Japan just to have the originals on DVD.

Not to bring it politics to this, but if Obama wants me to vote for him in two years, he needs to declare the original Star Wars Trilogy master prints as an endangered national treasure, seize them and have the Smithsonian convert then to HD, preferable 4K. God Bless America!
Jeff says
okay . . . I know you’ll all hate me but I am actually looking forward to this. Freinds of me saw some test footage of a scene done a couple of years ago and were raving about it. I am hoping it will be awesome.
Robin says
My inner child is weeping.
Well, okay, not really. I’ll just ignore it like I have everything else Lucas has done to the original trilogy since 1998. (Replacing Max Reebo with that fuzzy monstrosity and sexy backup singers? Really? I don’t think that’s the kind of entertainment Jabba would employ.) But I do wish he’d stop mucking about with it.
jay says
Thanks for the link. I have the originals on video tape, but its best to get them digitally while you still can. -lol
I’d much rather see him put one last movie together… Episode VII. While most of the original cast is still available. And I really don’t care how cheesy it is.
Chuck says
I’m a sucker for Star Wars….. big screen…. I’m there. I just wish he’d go back and used the Phantom Edit version for the three. Yes, it’s a money grab for Lucas, but let’s face it folks, he’s already rolling in money. That ship sailed a long time ago. He’s rich, we bought into it. Get over it and enjoy the big screen release.
Lejon from Chandler says
Hey, there’s this guy who doesn’t rape your childhood and know how to write and direct BETTER than Lucas ever did… I present Joss Whedon, My new master…
john says
Summer, I am SOOOoo jealous that you have the original Laser Discs still of the Star Wars Trilogy. We had them when I was a kid and they all delaminated and became unwatchable. We’d tried to convert them over to tape back when we first got them(BetaMax Baby) and they never worked out right.
I have been on the lookout for years for any of the “original” movies and kick myself for not having bought them on tape years ago before the “enhanced” versions came out. By that time I was in the military and just didn’t think about stuff like that.
Man, Jealous…….Jealous, I tell you……
Summer Brooks says
These are the laserdiscs that came out around the same time that SW Trilogy box set (the big black box with the Lucas book) came out… I think it was the last time before the Special Editions came out… say 1996-1998? I didn’t think Beta was still around in the mid-90s, or are you talking about the really old RCA CED discs from like 1982?
You can still find that trilogy box set here and there, and I have an extra laserdisc player that I need to figure out how to sell…
