When Matt Smith was hired as the Doctor, the BBC signed him to a three-year deal. But according to reports the youngest actor to play the Time Lord may be looking to regenerate from the role as early as next year.
British tabloids report that Smith is considering leaving the role after series six. Smith reportedly wants to pursue roles in Hollywood films.
If Smith left after just two years, that would tie him with classic Doctor Colin Baker for the third shortest run in the role. (Paul McGann was the Doctor in one movie on Fox and Christopher Eccleston only made one season). On average, actors tend to stay with the role for three years–or at least they did during the classic series.
According to The Sun, the BBC has nothing to say about Smith’s role in the show beyond the second series:
The BBC said: “Matt is filming the Christmas special and then goes on to film the second series.
“Beyond that, the BBC and Matt won’t speculate on things.”

With Bond 23 on hold indefinitely, perhaps Daniel Craig would be open to becoming the next Doctor Who. Far out I know, but one can postulate none-the-less.
Lee in WV says
My wife will be crushed if this happens.
KG from DC says
Too bad if this is true because I like him.

It is best not to listen to these tabloids. Every year they run the same stories, that the current Doctor is leaving, the next Doctor will be a woman, etc… . Saying these tabloids are sometimes right is the same as saying a broken clock is correct twice a day.
Mitch from Omaha says
As VyseN1 said, it’s all bs. Remember how this very same tabloid (and they are not newspapers, they are tabloids) was absolutely convinced that Eleven was going to be either Joanna Lumley, or an American actor?
They’re just throwing stuff out there, hoping that sooner or later they get something right.
TallGrrl says
1. “British tabloids report…”: Need we say any more?
2. “Smith reportedly wants to pursue roles in Hollywood films…”: Being that the man is an *actor* and actors want to…well…*act”, who can blame the guy?
I’m absolutely loving Smith as The Doctor. But if he does stay for just 3 years and then The Doctor regenerates, then I say we should all send him off with a very heartfelt Thank You and Much Success!
Bronzethumb (from Australia) says
TallGrrl beat me to my comment. I think the key word we need to fix on is TABLOIDS.
Tammy Smith says
They did this with David Tennant too. Every time you turned around the tabloids said that he was leaving. Matt Smith will leave when he wants to, not when the tabloids say he will.
Emily says
The Son’s source is a “pal”. A “pal” is not a real source, especially when it comes from the Son. Sorry, but this is not real news 🙂
El Zoof says
The Sun is a newspaper in the same way that Chuck is a serious treatise on the mating habits of garden gnomes. I’d sooner trust a psychic.
El Zoof says
I also just read that as “Will Smith will be the Doctor”, which horrified me.
Summer Brooks says
But also funny, ya gotta admit. About 2 seconds after you screeched, you giggled. You know you did.
Michael Falkner says
If Will Smith is the new Doctor, Tommy Lee Jones is the new companion. Next season/series of Doctor Who will be released under the code name “MiB-3.”
Tim the Avatarless says
Would be a shame if he left. So much better than Eccleston in the part, and possibly Tennant as well. Time will tell.
