May 6, 2010 (Burbank, CA) — Summer just got a lot scarier on The CW. The network will air the acclaimed drama MOONLIGHT on Thursday nights beginning June 3. MOONLIGHT will air from 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET, following encore episodes of the first season of the The CW’s hit drama, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.
On MOONLIGHT, Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin) is a captivating, charming and immortal private investigator from Los Angeles, who defies the traditional blood-sucking norms of his vampire tendencies by using his wit and powerful supernatural abilities to help the living. In a life-altering twist of fate, Mick was “bitten” 60 years ago by his new bride, the seductive Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon).
Forever 30 years of age, Mick’s as handsome and charismatic as the day he was “turned,” and he eschews others of his kind who view humans only as a source of nourishment. With only a handful of like-minded confidantes for company, including the eternally young, wealthy and mischievous Josef (Jason Dohring), a hedge fund trader who relishes his uniqueness, Mick fills his infinite days protecting the living.
One night years ago, a single act of kindness changed Mick when he saved a young girl’s life, making him want to be a better vampire. Now their paths cross again and Mick develops a distinctive bond with Beth Turner (Sophia Myles), who has grown into a beautiful, ambitious internet investigative reporter. Reconnecting with her unleashes feelings Mick knows he can’t pursue without exposing that part of him that would make him a monster in Beth’s eyes. As Mick lives between two realities, fighting his adversaries among the undead and falling in love, he discovers the mysteries and pleasures that a valuable life has to offer.

I tried to like this show when it first aired — mostly for Jason Dohring because he was awesome on Veronica Mars — but with both O’Loughlin and Myles fighting their native accents, the acting felt really stilted. Also, I’d just finished watching a long-running series about a crimefighting vampire. ::coughAngelcough::

Everyone knows how much I love Angel… I thought it was a great series, not just a great genre series (and yes Brian, I’ll always think it’s a better series than Buffy!) Well, I like Moonlight just as much, and by the 3rd-4th episode I was completely hooked. I even still watch when the mini-marathons pop up on Syfy Channel (like next Wednesday, for instance).
I honestly think that Moonlight had a lot more room and story to grow into, if given that second season, and could potentially have ended up with a better overall story arc than Angel had. Hell, if it had gotten a full 22 episode first season instead of being cut back because of the writer’s strike, I believe that second season might have happened. I also love the soundtrack.
Did you know that one of the producers, Josh Pate, is one of the brothers who created Surface? I didn’t realize that until last year, long after the series was off-air, but I’m inclined to keep an eye out for the next genre series he comes up with.

Summer, I agree…it was a great show that never really got the chance it deserved.

Random factoid: Sophia Myles of Moonlight once dated David Tennant of Doctor Who fame. Now he’s dating the actress who played the Doctor’s Daughter (Georgia Moffett).
