A decade ago, screenwriter J.D. Shapiro adapted L. Ron Hubbard’s “Battlefield Earth” for the big-screen.
That work won Shapiro a Razzie for the worst screenplay of the year and even to this day many consider “Battlefield Earth” one of the worst films ever committed to celluloid.
Now Shapiro is talking about his experience writing the film.
“Let me start by apologizing to anyone who went to see “Battlefield Earth,'” he writes in the New York Post. “It wasn’t as I intended — promise. No one sets out to make a train wreck. Actually, comparing it to a train wreck isn’t really fair to train wrecks, because people actually want to watch those.
“Now, looking back at the movie with fresh eyes, I can’t help but be strangely proud of it. Because out of all the sucky movies, mine is the suckiest,” he adds.

Sheer awesomeness 🙂
Not me says
What sucks is it was an awesome book (well at least the first half anyway)

I actually enjoyed the book particularly the latter half.
I was lucky I didn’t pay to see Battlefield Earth, I saw a copy off of the net for free.
The big problem there was that all of the action was in the latter half of the book, the first half was slow and difficult to get through. They should’ve skipped ahead about 1,000 pages and started there!

Loved the novel, detested what ended up on the screen. This could have been done right as a trilogy of films and by staying true to Hubbard’s original storyline.

I never read the book, but I didn’t see anything overly bad about the movie.
If you really want to watch a bad movie, go check out “Tomb Raider” or “Mission: Impossible II”. Those were awful and I really felt like I wasted my time and money seeing them.

For those who have read Hubbard’s epic novel, then it can be understood why we hold our noses at this stinko. John Travolta, what were you thinking?
