When “Eureka” returns next Friday night at 9 p.m. EST on SyFy, fans can expect a change in the series dynamic according to series star Colin Ferguson and creator Jamie Paglia.
Last season left off with Ferguson’s character, Sheriff Jack Carter fired from his job and Allison Blake expecting a child with her deceased husband, Nathan Stark. As the new season picks up, love will be in the air, but not for Jack and Allison.
“There’s dealing with Salli (who plays Allison) in more of a friendship capacity than in a lover capacity, because she’s pregnant,” Ferguson told io9. “I enjoyed that, and being able to dig deeper on the friendship angle of our relationship.”
But that doesn’t mean that romance is off the table for Carter. Paglia says a new character, Tess Fontana played by Jamie Ray Newman, will come to town and sparks will fly between her and the former sheriff. Tess has a history with Allison and the new romantic tension between Tess and Carter will create some waves, Paglia says.
“We wanted to bring in a new love interest for Carter, and change the dynamic that we had traditionally [featured, which was] the two alpha males battling over the alpha female,” said Paglia.
Fans can also expect that fan-favorite Fargo will find romance this season.
“We wanted to bring in a romantic quality of the show. We wanted Fargo to get a girlfriend, which we’ve finally done,” said Paglia. “We wanted to step up the relationship with Jo and Zane and challenge it. Is it a short term thing, or is it something more? And also for Zoe and her boyfriend Marcus, who’s at an age now where they are talking about college and whether or not they are going to go to the same place. We got a chance to deepen those connections and relationships.”
One element facing Carter is the decison of his teenager daugher Zoe on if and where she might attend college.
“What’s really nice is about these episodes is that I have these emotional lines, mostly with Jordan, whether she is or isn’t going to go to college,” Ferguson added.
As for the arc for the second half of the third season, Paglia says the town will be facing a threat that doesn’t neccessarily stem from a person serving as the villian.
“We wanted to have another Big Bad, but we wanted it to be something different and have it sort of tie in some how to the historical aspect of our characters and the town on a personal level,” he said. “So it’s not necessarily a person, its a thing. We don’t know what it is. But the question is, is it from out there? Is it man made? But it is coming towards Eureka, and we have to deal with it.”
“Eureka” returns on Friday, July 10 on SyFy.

Hooray! I’m working my way through the new “Season 3.0” DVD set and it’s reminding me how much I enjoy this show (not that I really forgot). Very excited to see Ms. Newman on yet another show I like. 🙂

Eureka is a nice series, however what bugs me about it was the big stores through the season they didn’t follow through. For example, Season 1 was about the Alien Artifact, Season 2 was about Henry from the future trying to change the past.
They just dropped those story lines because they became too hard to follow through with.

I really enjoyed the 1st. season of Eureka but was somewhat disappointed with the 2nd. In one of the commentaries for season 2 one of the producers specifically pointed out my problem in that the plots seemed to become the same thing week after week: Idiot genius screws up and average guy sheriff steps in to save the day. This despite the season arc. It bugged me that they had such a good cast with interesting characters but felt the need for this tawdry weekly plot device. I mean the show is called “Eureka” after the town, not “Carter”… There’s a whole cast of interesting and talented characters that could be featured each week.
This being said I’m still looking forward to season 3 which I haven’t seen any of as I got so disgusted with paying for TV I cancelled my satellite 2 years ago. I hated paying for commercials. Now I wait for the DVD’s and and check sites like this for new series I might like, then purchase them.
