The Wrath of CON!

March 19, 2008 By Sam Sloan 2 Comments

There’s a new Con in town mostly dedicated to Star Trek, but also all other SF venues. It’s called The Wrath of CON and will be held at the Marriott Bay Point Resort in Panama City Beach, Florida (USA). The event takes place from May 30 to June 1, 2008.

The Wrath of Con is a three-day celebration of all things sci-fi in a relaxed, non-rushed and fan-friendly atmosphere. Guests appearing at the show are carefully selected not only for the popularity of the character they played but also for their approachability in order to provide the fans with an unforgettable experience!

According to CON organizers, called BrightStar Productions, for years large companies have been forcing smaller promoters out of the science fiction convention business, eliminating competition and reducing the options available to the fans. Their “take it or leave it” attitude of long lines, hurried interactions and “move along please” is slowly becoming the norm for a fan’s convention experience. BrightStar Productions say they believe that convention fans deserve more for their money, something special: a great story to go along with the signed photo, time shared with a favorite guest over cocktails or a meal, a genuine conversation with the folks they’ve admired for all these years. In short, a return to our roots, to those things that made the Con a memory of a lifetime. This Wrath of CON event hopes to be able to do just that very thing.

The guest lineup thus far is pretty impressive with people like:

Jerry Doyle (Security Chief Garibaldi on “Babylon 5”), Gigi Edgley (Chiana from “Farscape”), Virginia Hey (Zhaan, also of “Farscape”). “Battlestar Galactica” will be represented well with visits from our good friend Mr. Richard Hatch (the original Apollo & now Tom Zarek), Aaron Douglas (Chief Galen Tyrol) and Tahmoh Penikett (Helo” Agathon).

Where would a Con named The Wrath of CON be without Star Trek representation? So, on hand is Chase Masterson (Leeta – “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”). Also appearing are Robert Meyer Burnett (Writer/Director – “Free Enterprise”), Andrew Probert (Technical Design – The Original “Battlestar Galactica,” & “Star Trek: The Next Generation”), David Wellington (Author – Monster Island, Monster Nation, Monster Planet, 13 Bullets, Plague Zone), Dr. Travis Taylor (NASA/DoD Future-Tech Scientist, Best-Selling Sci-Fi Author), Dr. Phil Plait (The Bad Astronomer, World Champion Debunker of Pseudo-Science), Chip Chalmers (Director – “Star Trek Next Generation,” “Star Trek Deep Space Nine”) and Brian Harnois (“Ghost Hunters”).

There are plenty of activities planned for the 3-day event including costuming, panels, workshops, gaming, lots of autograph opportunities and much more.

THIS IS FANTASTIC NEWS that a new FAN RUN CON IS IN TOWN! Maybe it’s about time that fans are sick and tired of over priced so called conventions that don’t give you the time of day, let alone let you really get a chance to speak with the celebrities. The professionals only want your money and don’t care that the fans also want PANEL DISCUSSIONS, An Art Show, a Gaming Room, and a large Dealer’s Room.

I’ve been going to a Fan Run Convention for years. And it is one of a few in the NE remaining. It’s summer venue is called Shore Leave. The one that I attend is called Farpoint. It was originally called Clipper Con, then October Trek, and then changed it’s name to Farpoint. It is usually in February. It’s a smaller Con than the rest, but can also have large crowds depending on who the celebrities are. Even so, they are always GREAT and everyone has a GREAT time.

And once again, WELCOME WRATH OF CON TO THE FAMILY of FAN RUN CONVENTIONS!
