Journeyman’s Kevin Falls Says Bye to Fans

December 19, 2007 By Sam Sloan 33 Comments

journeyman_main.jpg“Journeyman” will air its last episode, tonight – Wednesday, December 19, 2007 on NBC. For now, and unless the show gets picked up by another network, some other media outlet or a future special TV or big screen movie, fans will have to comfort themselves with the 13-episode DVD, which I’m sure will be forthcoming. When it does, do as fans of Firefly did, buy them by the bucket-full. Perhaps, just perhaps that will get the attention of the network decision makers. It did, afterall, get us a “Serenity” movie.

Series creator, Kevin Falls said his final goodbye to fans on the official NBC Journeyman Blog. Here is what Kevin had to say.

To the Fans,

Well, this is the message I didn’t want to post. I’m sure as most of you know by now, Journeyman will likely not be getting a back nine order. Rather than dwell on the reasons behind this decision, my fellow Executive Producer, the great Alex Graves and myself would rather remind people that our last two episodes will air next Monday night, December 17th at 10 PM and Wednesday December 19th at 10 PM. These two episodes will provide some answers, plenty of speculation, a few surprises and hopefully some satisfying closure. They are, I promise you, very entertaining.

I want to thank the tireless and talented Kevin McKidd and the entire cast (in my opinion, the best on television and guess what, the kindest and most professional). Yes, it was hard breaking stories on this show, but it would have been harder without the collective genius of the writing staff. Every guest director that passed through said our crew was the best they ever worked with, basically telling me something I already knew. Some producers loathe their relationships with studio and networks, maybe that’s because they never worked for the executives at 20th Century Fox and NBC. My sincerest thanks.

And finally, to the fans. Thank you for appreciating a different kind of show that sought to not only entertain, but to provoke and inspire. I’d like to think it says a lot about you. When the numbers slipped and we sometimes seconded guessed ourselves, you gave us validation and so we stayed the course.

Oh, and your fight to save Journeyman has humbled and moved us. I’m certainly not going to tell you to stop now. Again, our sincere gratitude and a deep bow from the waist.

It’s been fun. I wish you all the Happiest of Holidays.

Kevin Falls

It is us, the fans, that owe Kevin Falls, Alex Graves, Kevin McKidd and the entire cast and crew of “Journeyman” our deepest thanks for giving the audience, probably the best, smartest and most entertaining and satisfying SF program for the 2007 season. And, if I may quote Bill Pullman (President Thomas J. Whitmore) from the film ‘Independence Day,’ “We will not go quietly into the night,” but will continue the fight to get “Journeyman” the proper respect from network executives that it deserves. For those of us who are old enough to remember, it took ten years and a love for Star Wars to get Star Trek back, so this battle has only begun.

Sam, are you time-traveling too? It’s still 12/18, unless your past the international dateline. Though I’d love to be watching a new episode of Journeyman tonight, albeit for the last time.

Our Slice of SciFi Website is set on German time since our Webmaster lives and works from there. I always have to keep that time difference in mind as well if I have something from a network, studio, celebrity or one of their agents send me something that is time sensitive. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I am totally perplexed by this. With the total garbage out there, it makes little sense to cancel this show. It doesnt even use a large about of special effects so surely it isnt as expensive as other scifi genre shows. Big shame in my opinion.

Please save Journeyman. I recently turned my wife onto it and now she loves it. At least she can see ONE more episode. Hopefully more. Please let it live on USA Network or SciFi Channel. Let a great show continue.

Probably the best show to come out in years, and of course it gets canceled *sigh*
Well, I’m sure they’ll replace it with a winner like “National Bingo Night” or something similar…

A show that might cause people to think.
A show that might inspire a child to look up something historical.
A show that has a plot, has cause and affect, has action and reaction.
A show that shows you are in charge of how your destiny is played even if someone else is pulling the strings.

Of course it was canceled, It might cause people to think and then they will realize that most of the shows out there are plotless fluff designed for advertisers who are idiots.

If the advertisers had a brain this would stay on the air, think of, you could have twenty years of adverts and product placement in just one episode, but they don’t.

Good luck, Maybe SciFi will pick it up.

I swear, is it just me or is anyone else down to only a hand full of shows left that they really like? I am getting to the point now of not watching regular tv and just tivo everything, or wait until the dvd release. This goes beyond stupidity. this was, with out a doubt; the best show on tv.

Yeah… with this going away, the number of shows that I actually look forward to seeing new episodes is down to… er… 3. None of which are currently “in season.”
Like many other people, my Netflix queue is growing like gangbusters…

Journeyman, Bionic Woman, and The 4400 all had their pickup dates pass by with no action from NBC/Universal. Anybody sense a trend? And doesn’t it seem odd that the networks didn’t come out and “cancel” the shows…they just sat around and let the dates pass by. Don’t the producers who work for the networks at least deserve an official decision in a timely manner?

I can’t stand greedy network execs. This show is the BEST show on TV…it makes you think….it was ALWAYS entertaining….they didn’t give this show enough time to catch on….it didn’t put enough money in their already full pockets to warrant keeping….shame on you, you rich bas*****.

Incredible show. I only selected two new shows to watch this fall and this was one of them. In fact, the first half of Heroes new season was so slow that I looked forward to this show more than Heroes (although Heroes was great the second half). I don’t know why they don’t just move this show to USA Network. I’ve enjoyed the Dead Zone over the last several years on USA, and Journeyman shows much more potential. Yes, I hope a cable show will pick this show up. Since iTunes yanked this show off like the rest of NBC before I was able to buy the first several episodes, it looks like I’ll have to buy or rent the DVDs.

It’s the Law of Commercial Mediocrity in action. Never own the nicest home in a neighborhood; all the rest of the houses will yank the value of your home down. If you have the poorest home in the neighborhood, all the rest of the houses will hike the value of your home. It is the same for TV. The best shows are always cancelled. The cruddy and mediocre programs thrive. If Journeyman had been dumbed down sufficiently, stuffed with cheap sexual antics and cast with 14 year old leads, the series would have been picked up by the network and we wouldn’t care because we wouldn’t be watching it anyway. The fault is not NBC’s executives. The blame is entirely Kevin Falls’. He created a show that is smart, intellectually provocative and fun…naturally, the mass audience would skip it.

Letting Journeyman go is a travesty. This show was getting better every week. Kevin Falls created a wonderful show and NBC — do you know what you had with a series with Kevin McKidd in the lead? Kevin McKidd has an incredible range as an actor and that gave this series such a chance to soar.

NBC should just start this series over in the new year and pretend it never aired before. I don’t think Heroes was the right lead-in. People interested in that kind of comic-book storytelling are not necessarily the same kind of person who could appreciate Journeyman.

NBC give your audience a break from all endless Law and Order.

Devastated, hard to believe, there are so many lesser than average shows out there that don’t have the ‘can’t wait to see the next show, sit on the edge of your seat’ dynamic, how oh how can it not be continuing? I’ve always loved the time travel theme but this show beats all of them, there’s a complexity and suspense involved. First show I adored, esp the classic ending, next couple of episodes I was thinking ‘How they gonna keep this going, keep the interest?’ Well they did it and its kept weaving its magic and kept me on the edge of my seat. I JUST LOVE THIS SHOW!! Yeah L&O on for years, so what more murder, death and destruction, obviously we need more of that instead of inspiring uplifting stories with gorgeous people to boot! Replay the first season, get more people interested and then start filming a new series, please!

I’m not much of a TV fan passing on practically everything except some top notch sci-fi stuff and news. But this show really hit the mark with me. One of the most captivating, thought provoking, inspiring, intelligent, and well written shows I’ve ever seen. “Journeyman” spoke to the mind and the heart and for a brief time, restored my faith in TV entertainment. I cannot heap enough accolades on how outstanding a show I found this. Coming from someone not easily moved by most programming fare, I felt compelled to write in a perhaps, vain and desperate attempt to save a show – a work of art I admire and appreciate.

I made a list of all the shows I watch regularly during the week. I watch at least one show from ABC, NBC, Fox, PBS, CourtTV/TruTV, and the Sci-Fi Channel.

As for CBS, I don’t even bother watching anything on that network, and haven’t bothered in a long time. Not sure why, but nothing from them has ever impressed me. So even if CBS does come up with a good show once in awhile, I never know about it, since I don’t see their promo’s. ๐Ÿ™‚

NBC had two shows I’ve liked, Journeyman and The Office. I used to watch the Law & Order series, but my interest in them tends to be cyclical. I watched the Heroes pilot, as sci-fi is my cup of tea normally, but I didn’t keep up with it. So most of the shows I’ve come to like have been on ABC, Fox, PBS, or cable. Heck, even PBS holds my attention more than NBC.

When The Office regretfully ends (which hooking up Pam & Jim has probably guaranteed), so will my regular interest in anything from NBC, looks like. High five!

Hi, This was an intelligent, well written (and acted) show, with lots of potential. What on earth is wrong with the studios. This is the first show about time travel I’ve watched that actually treats the subject seriously, and treats the audience as intelligent human beings.

What baffles me, is why Charmed lasted so long, yet Firefly and Angel were both cancelled early, and now Journeyman. Very Sad

This was one of the best written shows that I have watch in a long time. Each episode was like a mini-movie. Compelling as I am 40 years old and many memories from the 70s 80s 90s and of course 00s. Nostalgic, funny, I could nto wait for it on Mondays.

Kevin Falls, you can’t give up. You have to find a home, there is so much potential. I will buy the DVD, and I have never purchased a TV series. How many shows have been ‘SAVED” recently via campaigns, not many. You simply have to find another network maybe F/X or Sci-Fi or USA.

This is a quality product, not give up yet!

    Thanks for a forumto vent..

Lets hope the podcase has some good news for the millions of fans. And lets get these cheap A$$ writers back to work, I didn’t pay all this money for HDTV and sound system to watch reruns, and 200 a month for cable and Sat. TV.

We didn’t watch Journeyman when it was on, but I think it’s one of the best TV series ever! I love the plots and the characters and relationships. Wonderful!!!
But what I’d REALLY like to know is, has it come out on DVD? Will it ever come out? Is there anyway to get it perminantly, rather than on Hulu where they might take it off at any time! I really don’t want to lose the series!!
Please answer! It’s for my dad’s birthday this month, and I know he’d LOVE IT!!!!!

    Sci-Fi fan

P.S. Thank you cast and crew of Journeyman for giving us such a wonderful, fantasic show!
