Movies about the future are slowly becoming a reality one new technology at a time. Take, for example, laser guns. A staple of sci fi movies for years, they’ve never quite come to fruition — until now. A California company called TRW Systems is working on a laser beam rifle that’ll be able to burn things from 5 miles away. Yeah, 5 miles.
And when I say burn things, I’m not talking about pieces of paper. It could burn a fatal, quarter-inch-wide hole in a person’s body without making a sound from 5 miles out. Oh— great. Somehow, these things always seemed a lot cooler in space. Now that its possible to get your guts burned out from across town I’m not sure how psyched I am about it.

On the flip-side, where in America (besides Kansas) do you have a 5-mile, unobstructed view of *anything*? There’s too much crap in the way. But still…. scary.

My home state of Nebraska. Oklahoma, North & South Dakota, Eastern Wyoming and the panhandle of Texas.

I would suspect that with this gun, you make your own unobstructed view! 😉

After reading this I suddenly thought of Dark Man II when that crazy scientist was able to build his particle weapon. Anyway if we have to invent deadly laser weapons can we at least make sure the beams come in a varity of colors.

I want the purple one, motherf****r! 🙂
Kurt says
GREEN!

Sweet. More bad guys living in fear. Nice.

Wow, that is wicked. Soon we’ll finally be able to recreate the scene from Congo where we split a bunch of evil, mutant Gorillas in half.
It’s no 110,000-volt Taser canon… but wicked, nonetheless:

I can see at least some good applications of this technology and that would be sliceing up asteroids that threaten our planet or using it to mine ore in space or here on earth. This new laser could be a good thing but sadley I foresee it being used as a weapon first.
One other question though, how much energy does this thing require and where is that energy coming from. Before we get to the really cool laser technology we need a brand new energy source and honestly a new power source will be better than some laser gun.

Though this does bring great potential to the world, it will, like computers, amongst other things, be used for military purposes. i dont remember the actual video, but on youtube they have these awesome vids where they shoot airplanes out of the sky, and even shoot artillary pecies out of the sky. On the other hand, i really dont think that the weapon pictured is the rifle they are talking about. That one is the rifle to blind and disorent humans, which is a rather easy task, as we have sensitive eye nerves and a sudden abundance of a light source can easily fry the optic nerve

consider a lean and thin man in the target……… and the beam burnt that damn quarter inch hole in his chest and a part of the extra residual beam struck a child a quarter mile away with no obstruction. That will be a disaster which i will never like to hear or see.

It reminds me of the Covenant Carbine out of Halo 3

nah its more like beam rifle
