We received this from our Slice Fan Mailbag and, on a certain level, we agree with the writer.
The re-imagined “Battlestar Galactica” is not your 1970’s BSG and is not intended for all members of the family. It is darker, grittier, sexier and more realistic to the basic flaws of real human nature, where, like in real life, it is hard at times to distinquish the good guys from the bad guys. Life onboard this Galactica is fraught with multi-layered shades of grey with little clearly marked black and white road signs. Which is one reason why, around here anyway, we love it as much as we do.
Hey Mike,
Have listened to all your ‘SliceofScifi’ podcasts. Thanks, by the way.
I know you guys are big Battlestar fans but just wanted to let you know another viewpoint.
You see..
BSG isn’t a program I can recommend to my kids or watch with my young family.
Second, each time I watch it I get the strong impression that these folk don’t deserve to
survive!
You see, dark and darker isn’t everyone’s choice – Battlestar’s taking dark to a new level.
Maybe you could just not swoon so much at BSG and acknowledge that perhaps there
are some other fans out there who aren’t so into dark.
What I’m suggesting is a little more balance.
With thanks,
BarryC.
I never would have thought of it as a kids’ show to begin with. Or even “family TV”. Did anyone actually suggest that it was anything other than adult TV?
No one…not SciFi, not the BSG writers, producers, critics, cast, fans, Slice of Sci-Fi…have ever said that his was a “family show.” It’s rated “TV14.” Therefore, it is not intended for children.
I don’t think the great people of Slice of Sci-Fi should stop swooning over their feelings for BSG. Why should they? It’s their show! It’s broadcasted on a podcast and XM…not on public radio. Give them a break!
If they like a show, then why shouldn’t they swoon over it?
Come on guys, these are truly desperate people. Only ~50,000 out of billions. I can’t say I fully agree with their tactics to get information, but lets face it, they need the info.
Also, I would suspect that Mr. Moore is trying to say something about what America is doing to their detainee’s and enemy combatants.
I don’t understand this at all. So are Mike and Co. supposed to cater their likes and dislikes to the listeners now? Stop talking about BSG and talk about something kid-friendly? How is that bringing another viewpoint or bringing balance to the show? It’s ridiculous.
Why doesn’t Barry just call in to the voicemail line and present his own point of view, rather than trying to force other people to bow to his needs. What difference does it make to his family what people on SoSF enjoy?
I still haven’t watched BSG, but I understand it is an adult oriented show. While I understand the point of the commenter that he would like to see lighter scifi entertainment, I don’t see what that has to do with Mike’s or any other Slicer’s enthusiasm for the show. If the commenter wants more coverage of a particular more family friendly series, then he need only ask for more coverage of that.
