In a recent interview that Brent Spiner did with the Toronto Sun to promote his new CBS sci-fi thriller “Threshold,” he spoke at length about Jimmy Doohan’s passing, the future of Star Trek and his involvement, as well, of course, Threshold.
Concerning the death of Star Trek legend James Doohan, Brent said, “He was a lovely guy and of course I’m very sad to hear of his passing.” “He actually worked a lot with LeVar Burton because they both played engineers,” said Spiner. He stated that sometime after the shooting of the “Relics” episode with Doohan for Star Trek: The Next Generation, he had the opportunity to run into Doohan a few times.
Concerning the future of the Star Trek franchise and his involvement in it as an actor playing Data, Spiner was clear in saying, “I think it’s only in repose, it’s hibernating.” “Paramount would not agree that it’s dead as a franchise. They have some plan down the line for it to be reimagined,” continued Spiner. As for Data? “I’m a guy in his mid-90’s (really Brent is 56),” he jockingly replied. “I don’t think it would look great on me anymore.”
On his new program, “Threshold,” Spiner gets to look more like himself and that pleases him. On the new sci-fi adventure he plays a NASA microbiologist who has been selected to work with a group of other specialists as they research and exam the possibility that aliens are already among us and preparing for an invasion of Earth.
Threshold begins this fall on the CBS’s Friday night line-up at 9PM ET/PT. It is up against stiff competition from the already well established Stargate: Atlantis on the SciFi Channel. Friday is starting to look like a TiVO or DVR night.
