Yes folks this is John Barrowman looking absolutely fabulous!

Yes folks this is John Barrowman looking absolutely fabulous! The illustrious leader of Torchwood starred as Zaza for La Cage Aux Folles a few years back and he was brillant. He joins other Doctor Who notables such as David Tennant and current Doctor Matt Smith who also donned wig & gown for drag roles. Don’t they all look positively smashing! One person commented that David looked much better than most of the girls he dated. Not sure I’d agree but Barrowman is certainly gorgeous.

In the late 80’s there was a rumor going around that would see Star Trek adapted as Broadway musical. That project never saw the light of day but that doesn’t mean the idea of a musical Trek died.

Comedians Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal imagined what might happen if middle schoolers put on a musical based on classic Trek. We have to admit the video is pretty great and makes us wonder if a musical based on Trek might not be a good idea after all.

Given the amount of time it takes George R.R. Martin to craft and publish the next installment of A Song of Ice and Fire, it’s looking more and more likely that Game of Thrones will end before the final volume is published. Add in that the producers are saying they believe seven seasons of the show would be a good run for the series, that means the TV show could SPOIL the novels.

According to EW, producers Dan Weiss and David Benioff are aware of where Martin plans to take the series and conclude it.

“Ideally, the books come out first,” Benioff says, adding that he and Weiss are aware of the broad strokes of where the novels go.

It’s still possible Martin could get the final two installments in the novel series out before the series gets to its seventh season.

But we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

NASA’s Mars rover, Opportunity has given humanity an unprecedented look at the red planet. And now, nine years into its mission, the rover has set a record.

Last Wednesday, Opportunity set the record for the most-driven NASA vehicle ever to leave Earth. With its latest mission taking it 263 feet to the edge of the Endeavour crater, the rover has driven 22.22 miles away from our planet. That breaks the record of the Apollo 17 lunar rover, which was driven 22.21 miles across the surface of the Moon by astronauts Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt in December of 1972.

While the rover has set a record for NASA, it doesn’t hold the world record for most distance driven on an alien landscape. The Russian remote-controlled Lunokhod 2 rover, which drove 23 miles on the lunar surface in 1973

The long-awaited sequel in the rebooted franchise universe took in $70.6 million over the weekend and has made $84 million since it opened Thursday. However, those totals aren’t nearly as strong as the 2009 reboot made on its opening weekend when it took in $75.2 million.

Iron Man 3 took second place with $35.2 million, followed by The Great Gatsby with $23.4 million.

Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain continues to linger in the top five, taking fourth place with $3.1 million, while the animated comedy The Croods did $2.8 million.

Looks like the team of Steven Moffat and Matt Smith won’t break up once the fiftieth anniversary of Doctor Who is over.

Moffat confirmed he’d be back last week and now Smith has confirmed he’ll be back for series eight.

“I’m on a break for a couple of months while I’m in Detroit making How To Catch A Monster. We come back and shoot the Christmas special over the summer, then we go on to the next series, which will either start filming at the end of this year or at the start of 2014.,” he tells The Sun.

Sounds like great news for fans of Doctor Who.

Last week, we reported that actor Michael B. Jordan was in the running to play Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot.

Last week, we reported that actor Michael B. Jordan was in the running to play Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot.

The news was met with skepticism in some corners related to reports that Allison Williams was in the running to play Sue Storm aka the Invisible Girl. Some fans raised a flag because of the actors’ races –Williams is white, Jordan is African-Amercian.

Jordan says skin color shouldn’t make a difference in whether or not someone is considered for the role.

“The characteristics of the Human Torch are his name is Johnny Storm, he’s charismatic, and he’s a playboy. That’s it. You know what I’m saying? That’s all there is,” Jordan explains

Jordan goes on to say that he’s worked with the reboot director Josh Crank on Chronicle, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to get the part or that there is any official news on the role yet.

“It’s something that, if it happened, I would be ecstatic. I’d love to be a part of it. I get a lot of support and a lot of love from comic-book geeks. I love it,” he said. “If you go looking for negative things, you’re going to find it.”

Amazon thought the Zombieland series would be their golden ticket into the world of original online programming. However, viewers thought differently and Amazon listened.

Amazon has jumped head first into the world of original online programming just as Netflix, its main competitor for that market, has been doing for the past year. Netflix saw tremendous success with its Kevin Spacey produced and starring vehicle “House of Cards,” an American remake of a British miniseries and the Steven Van Zandt hit series “Lillyhammer.” Next up for the live streaming and DVD service is the return of all new episodes of Jason Bateman and the gang in “Arrested Development” and the highly anticipated new supernatural series “Hemlock Grove.”

Hoping to tap into the growing market of online and live streaming programming Amazon has at least 14 of its own new shows in production with the most eagerly awaited thought to be “Zombieland,” a series based on the successful big screen cult film which starred Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone. The Amazon series which had already completed its pilot and several episodes does not star any of the film’s actors which is one of the biggest reasons it failed so badly among online viewers. Also the fact that the writing for the pilot lacked any originality gave reviewers the kind of target they needed to firmly plant several well placed shots into its cranium causing Amazon to drop the series like a bad virus.

Zombieland’s replacement will be a political comedy titled “Alpha House” starring the very versatile John Goodman. It has garnered rave reviews by those who have watched its pilot. While the zombie show was lucky to get an average of 3 out of 5 stars, the Goodman show was a consistant 4 star rater according to Reuters.

Alpha House promises wit and satire and comes from the pen of Doonesbury creator, Academy Award nominee and Pulitzer-Prize winner Garry Trudeau. The series centers on the lives of four Senators sharing the same Washington D.C. home. Some are calling it The West Wing with a sense of humor. Costarring with Goodman are Clark Johnson, Matt Malloy, and Mark Consuelos. Some acting names of note making guest appearances are Bill Murray, Haley Joel Osment, Brooke Bloom and Ted King. The pilot is available for viewing on Amazon.com.

Having your favorite TV shows spoiled by your Twitter feed could soon become a thing of the past thanks to a 17-year-old girl.

Having your favorite TV shows spoiled by your Twitter feed could soon become a thing of the past thanks to a 17-year-old girl.

Jennie Lamere wrote a plug-in for the social networking software called Twivo that allows users to censor their feed about certain shows and characters for a set period of time.

Lamere wrote the code as part of a Boston hackathon hosted by TVNext. According to Mother Jones, Lamere wrote the code alone in about ten hours. It’s reported she hatched the idea the night before the competition began and was able to achieve the results she wanted with just 150 lines of code. Twivo works as an extension in your browser. You simply type in the words or phrased you want blocked and they are deleted from your feed until a set time or you turn off the block because you’ve seen the show in question.

She won in the subcategory “best use of sync-to-broadcast” and then won “best in show,” beating out professional developers, including ESPN, the Echo Next and Klout, sent by the event’s sponsors.

Lamere says the code is still in demo mode and that she needs a couple more weeks to finalize it before she releases the plug-in. As part of her winning the competition, she’s attracted the attention of tech company Furious Minds who is working with her on finalizing the plug-in and its marketing.

“We’re always interested in the convergence between TV and social media, and Jen’s hack was awesome, not to mention she did the entire thing herself,” says Ashley Swartz, CEO and founder of Furious Minds.

Lamere was the only female to enter the competition. After winning, she returned to her all-girls’ high school where she hopes to inspire other female coders to enter future competitions.

May we suggest that for her next project, Lamere extend the plug-in for also block SPOILER-filled feeds on Facebook as well?

Release dates and authors were posted on Amazon, but as the date grew closer those titles vanished and haven’t been heard from since.

If you were left wondering what happened to them and why the Trek reboot has only been delved into in two movies and some tie-in comics, you can blame the business side of things. According to a long article in TheWrap, director J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot production company initially had big plans for the reboot of Star Trek. According to an inside source, Abrams and Bad Robot wanted to phase out tie-in merchandise based on classic Trek and replace it an ambitious multi-media reboot of the Trek universe that would have included television, digital entertainment and books.

Why didn’t it happen?

A dispute over the rights to Star Trek. The rights to Star Trek are owned by both Paramount and CBS Consumer Products. CBS owns the rights to the original episodes, the characters and the universe while Paramount owns the movie rights. In order to make a new movie, Paramount has to license the rights to the characters from CBS.

CBS also held onto the ability to create future Star Trek TV shows.

Abrams and Bad Robot wanted to phase out tie-in merchandise with the classic Trek cast and create lines with the rebooted crew. CBS continued to manufacture merchandise with the classic Trek characters and research found it was creating “brand confusion” among consumers.

“J.J. just threw up his hands,” a source tells TheWrap. “The message was, ‘Why set up all this when we’ll just be competing against ourselves?’ The studio wanted to please Bad Robot, but it was allowing CBS to say yay or nay when it came to what was happening with the Star Trek products.”

CBS and Bad Robot have worked together on a limited scale — there is an upcoming Trek tie-in game set in the rebooted universe.

But it looks like it could have been a lot more ambitious in nature had all three parties been able to agree.

Warning: If you have not seen the season finale of Arrow and don’t want to know any details about it, please stop reading now! There are SPOILERS ahead for the entire episode!

The first season of Arrow wrapped up Wednesday evening and it left a lot of cliffhangers open for next season.

Among the shocking twists and turns of the season finale was the death of a major character. Tommy Merlin was killed helping to save Laurel from a collapsing building in the Glades.

As Oliver showed up to try and save his friend, Tommy passed away.

Producer Marc Guggenheim says that Tommy’s death was essential to the character arc for Oliver next season.

“It really had nothing to do with his trajectory as the Dark Archer. It really had to do with the fact that we wanted Oliver to suffer a loss at the end of the season,” says Guggenheim. “When we thought about the characters that he could lose who would have the biggest impact not just on Oliver, but on the show, Tommy was the name that rose to the top very quickly. Tommy’s death impacts pretty much every member of our cast. Obviously his death impacts Oliver and Laurel (Katie Cassidy), but there’s a closeness between Thea (Willa Holland) and Tommy that we’ve established on the show, Lance, obviously because of the connection that Laurel has with Tommy and Moira (Susanna Thompson) because of her responsibility with Tommy. He’s the one character whose death would have the biggest impact.”

Columnist Esther Zuckerman doesn’t paint a very pretty picture of current Star Trek guru J.J. Abrams in her recent article for The Atlantic Wire. In her piece titled “J.J. Abrams May Have Taken ‘Star Wars’ Because of William Shatner Merchandise” she more than hints at the notion that Mr. Abrams, who in the past has made it known that he wasn’t a fan of Trek as a kid, was more than eager to take on the Star Wars franchise at Disney’s behest more for the merchandising attachment than to any great love for the Lucas creation.

It would appear that Disney is more than willing to work some kind of merchandising deal with Abrams while Paramount/CBS apparently has not been as eager to let go of their grip over control of the half-century blockbuster Trek universe when it comes to comic book futures, coffee mugs, ad infinitum. Also, the parent company of Trek has maintained its desire to continue putting out merchandise with original series character likeness, i.e., William Shatner and company, along with the new faces of Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. Abrams wanted to nix the old guys completely for the new kids on the block but CBS and Paramount roadblocked his efforts. Now it would appear Abrams and his production company Bad Robot may have more free reign in the realm of Star Wars to merchandise pretty much whatever he can dream up.

Reviewed by Michael Hickerson (Slice of SciFi Editor)

It’s been four years since J.J. Abrams revitalized the Star Trek movie franchise and with each passing summer, expectations for the next voyage “where no man has gone before” have ratcheted up higher and higher. Add to it the extreme secrecy surrounding certain plot elements and character identities and you’ve got a movie that I entered with pretty much the same feeling as I did the first revitalized Trek a few years ago — equal parts anticipation and apprehension.

Huge parts of me were hoping that Star Trek into Darkness would be to the Trek franchise what The Dark Knight was to the revitalized Batman franchise.

Lofty expectations like that are probably unfair. But I’ll also say that Christopher Nolan didn’t make us wait four years for the next installment either.

As a summer action movie, Star Trek into Darkness works on just about every level. The film begins with Kirk blatantly violating the Prime Directive to save Spock and a planet full of aliens from an erupting volcano. The decision creates conflicts with Starfleet for Kirk and tensions in Kirk’s friendship with Spock.

But there’s little time for these matters when a terrorist by the name of John Harrison begins targeting Starfleet installations. Kirk is enlisted to pursue Harrison and bring him to justice.

I won’t say a lot more about the film’s plot at this point to avoid ruining any of the movie’s surprises for anyone. Star Trek into Darkness examines the theme of family — and let’s just say that as a family, the crew of the Enterprise is a highly dysfunctional one. But they all come together over the course of the film, helped by a common foe and by the events that unfold in the film.

Again, I’m trying to be deliberately vague here so as to not ruin things for anyone who hasn’t seen the film yet. The film is full of homages to past Trek installments — some of them will be obvious to even casual fans of the franchise and some will reward eagle-eyed long-time Trek fans who can probably recite the original 79 episodes backwards and forwards.

The film will probably find wide appeal among more casual fans and I fully expect a certain segment of the Trek fandom to out and out hate the film. Interestingly, Peter Weller is in the film as a Starfleet admiral and his character has a lot of echoes to one Weller played in the final season of Enterprise.

And, of course, since this is a J.J. Abrams movie, there’s lense flare. But either I’m getting used to it or Abrams has toned down his penchant for the lense flare because it wasn’t quite as glaring as it was in the first installment.

Like the first installment, Trek into Darkness left me wanting to see more adventures with the rebooted crew and yearning to follow this crew on their own five year mission exploring space. Hopefully we won’t have to wait four years for the next installment….

Oh and any Trek fan who doesn’t get a lump in his or her throat when Christopher Pike recites the immortal lines, “Space, the final frontier…” …well, let’s just say you’re as emotionally detached as Spock wishes he could be in this film.

While the Judge Dredd reboot Dredd wasn’t a huge hit at the box-office, the film has found a second life on DVD and Blu-Ray. It’s a big enough second life that actor Karl Urban says fans shouldn’t give up on a Dredd sequel.

“Interestingly enough, I did have breakfast with Alex Garland this morning. It’s not off the agenda,” he tells Collider. “Clearly everyone has woken up to the fact that an audience has found this movie and loves it. It’s entirely possible, and if people want to see another installment then they should be vocal about that, because, it can happen. The power of fandom can resurrect projects. In fact, that’s what happened with Star Trek. They weren’t going to do a third season until fans did a letter writing campaign and they continued that series.”

Urban says the best thing fans can do is keep asking for a sequel to the film.

The Avengers 2 could be missing one of the lead character from the first installment -- and no, we don't mean Iron Man.

The Avengers 2 could be missing one of the lead character from the first installment — and no, we don’t mean Iron Man.

While it’s unsure yet how Robert Downey, Jr. will return for the sequel, there’s another thespian who could be out of the film. But this one could be recast.

Total Film has a story that Marvel studio executives are unhappy with comments made by actor Jeremy Renner about his role as Hawkeye in the film installment.

“For 90 percent of the movie, I’m not the character I signed on to play,” Renner said to Total Film. “It’s kind of a vacancy. [He's] not even a bad guy, because there’s not really a consciousness to him. To take away who that character is and just have him be this robot, essentially, and have him be this minion for evil that Loki uses … I was limited, you know what I mean? I was a terminator in a way. Fun stunts. But is there any sort of emotional content or thought process? No.”

Daily Superhero cites sources in Hollywood as saying Renner is out of the upcoming second film and that if Hawkeye is needed, the role will be recast.

There’s no official word yet, but we’ll let you know if we hear anything official on this one.

Warner Brothers told them no, but that's not stopping fans of Young Justice from trying to get the series back.

Warner Brothers told them no, but that’s not stopping fans of Young Justice from trying to get the series back.

Last week, Warner Brothers told fans of the animated series that efforts to revive the recently cancelled series would not be successful, but some fans aren’t taking no for answer. Appealing to fans of the show to prove Warner Brothers wrong, a campaign to raise $10 million for a third season of the show are underway.

The campaign will run for 82 days instead of the standard 60 days for more Kickstarter campaigns.

Whether or not the group can reach the ambitious goal remains to be seen, but you have to admire their gumption.

A lot of pilots got good news this week, but several promising genre pilots didn't get picked up as well.

A lot of pilots got good news this week, but several promising genre pilots didn’t get picked up as well.

Entertainment Weekly has a break down of ten pilots that looked like a sure thing on paper, but eventually got passed over for a series order. Among them are a couple of genre projects that fans may wonder what might have been.

While it picked up the rebooted Tomorrow People, the CW has decided that it won’t go with a tv series based on The Selection. The popular young adult novel by Kierra Cass centers on a working class young woman chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince’s hand to become the nation’s next queen. The CW has been interested enough in adapting the series for television that it’s had the series in development for two pilot cycles and two pilots. It looks like it just didn’t make the cut. Maybe third time’s the charm?

Fox also passed on an adaptation of a young adult novel with Delirium. Written by Lauren Oliver, the trilogy is about a world where love is deemed illegal and is able to be eradicated with a special procedure. With 95 days to go until her scheduled treatment, Lena Holoway (Emma Roberts) does the unthinkable: She falls in love. While the book has a solid following on-line, the pilot was deemed “too young” for Fox’s audience and the network passed.

ABC expanded its Once Upon A Time franchise and is looking to build the network around Joss Whedon. That left little room for a series based on the Disney theme parked ride Big Thunder Mountain. The pitch was a brilliant, late 19th century New York doctor and his family are given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to relocate to a frontier mining town run by a powerful, but mysterious tycoon, they quickly realize that not everything in Big Thunder is as it seems. ABC passed on the show because there were problems with the pilot.

It seems like with the current vampire craze that a soap with the legends of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein and Dorian Gray, among others woven into it would be a sure thing. Apparently not so much with Gothica, which was rejected due to its low production values.

There was also an adaptation of the best-selling graphic novel The Sixth Gun in development for NBC, but the network passed because it was considered “too niche.” Keep in mind, NBC also passed on The Walking Dead for the same reason.
