Abrams: There was a role for Shatner in upcoming “Trek”

October 22, 2008 By Mike Hickerson 5 Comments

For months now, William Shatner has been claiming that he wants to have a cameo in the upcoming “Star Trek” movie, but that he hadn’t been contacted by anyone associated with the film.  Shatner posted a video on his web site last month calling out director J.J. Abrams, saying that he (Shatner) has found a way to bring Captain James T. Kirk back from the dead in his novels, so why couldn’t Abrams find a way to bring Kirk onto the big-screen.  (The video with Shatner’s original comments is below)

Last week in Entertainment Weekly, Abrams revealed that he had written a scene for Shatner to cameo, but the actor but the kibosh on the idea.

“I don’t know how my life has become a thing where William Shatner talks to me through YouTube,” Abrams told EW. “I was such a huge fan of his, but we wrote a scene for him in the movie and it didn’t feel right. And he said to us—he said publicly—that doing a cameo didn’t interest him. Which I totally appreciate. But we did try.”

In response, Shatner gave EW a statement through his spokeperson, saying, “”I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to be involved in the Star Trek universe at this point.”

Shatner (as Kirk) hasn’t been involved in the “Star Trek” universe since 1994. “Star Trek” CAN exist without him. The ego of this guy astounds me.

They should give a Cameo to Adam West instead.

Is Williams ego really that big or is he having a lend of us. I really don’t know. I like most ‘Star Trek’ fans thought the whole thing needed a bit of a shake up. Hopefully this new film will do that. I will watch with an open mind, William or no William. But maybe it would have been fun to give him a role different to Captain Kirk! Like they did in Superman and ‘that’ Lost Is Space movie.

The last thing the rebooted franchise needs is for Shatner to get his fingers into it.

We’ve already gone down the road with old cast members. It’s been done. I say just move forward and don’t bring any of the original cast back. Let the new franchise stand on its own with the cast as it is.
