Amazon Studios is picking up the sci-fi classic Barbarella as a series after a year of scrutiny. Skyfall scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade have been given the task of taking the Jean-Claude Forest creation about a sexy space traveller on a mission to stop the evil Durand-Durand from inventing the ultimate destructive weapon and turning it into a series available for download via Amazon.com.
Gaumont International is working with Amazon Studios to put together the pilot, which will be directed by Nicolas Refn (Drive,Valhalla Rising) who will also serve as the series’ co-executive producer with Martha De Laurentiis.
Gaumont International is no stranger to new media productions having brought the hit sci-fi/horror series Hemlock Grove to Netflix. The company is also creating a Netflix series called Narco.
Barbarella will add to the stable of new series created by Amazon Studios. They currently have two comedy shows and five dramatic outings to their credit.
The film version of Barbarella starring a very young Jane Fonda made its debut in 1968 and has become a sci-fi cult classic.
