Crimson Peak is the gothic horror film, to be directed by Pacific Rim helmer Guillermo del Toro and was to headline Cumberbatch. Neither Legendary Pictures or Cumberbatch’s representatives have come forth with a reason for the star’s leaving the project.
However, Benedict hasn’t left del Toro in a lurch since filming isn’t due to start until January 2014, giving the director plenty of time to find a replacement lead.
The rest of the current cast, consisting of Jessica Chastain (Mama), Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim) and Mia Wasikowska (Alice In Wonderland) are still on board.
It is still a bit of a mystery as to why the highly sought after actor has left since his future film projects are not in conflict with this one, nor is there any indication of a difference of opinion between the studio brass, del Toro and his main star.
