Audiences were looking to go back to school for the second weekend in a row as Monsters University took the top spot at the box office.
Monsters University topped the box office for a second straight week with $46.2 million, just a 44% drop from last weekend’s debut.
But the story at the box office was The Heat. The film took in $40 million its opening weekend.
Presidential hostage thriller White House Down took fourth place with $25.7 million.
The debut fell about $6 million short of expectations, and its cause wasn’t helped by reviewers. Only 50% of critics gave it a thumbs-up, compared with 73% of audiences, Rottentomatoes.com says.
The Brad Pitt zombie film World War Z took third place with $29.8 million, while the Superman reboot Man of Steel rounded out the top five with $20.8 million.

It was an okay movie, but the most unoriginal movie they’ve produced yet. It was like a cross between Revenge of the Nerds, Animal House and The Skulls (in a lesser way). It was still fun, my 3 and 6 yro loved it, thus – win for Pixar. However, as a person who loved Monsters Inc, a movie made before either of my kids were born – it was a a bit of a let down.
