Ed Moore says
Sorry there is no ‘get over it’ for casting a non caucasian as any roll in Fantastic Four unless the entire cast is. Anything else will change the dynamic and if that occurs they are no longer the Fantastic Four. If they want a non caucasian FF then make the movie but call it something lese because it is not the FF.
Summer Brooks says
I don’t understand how that even makes sense. As long as Sue and Johnny Storm can plausibly be biological brother and sister, why do you think race is such a major factor in the Fantastic Four being the Fantastic Four?
Laith Preston says
While I’m not a huge FF fan I agree. And for that matter is there anything that couldn’t be simply retcon’d that requires the Storm siblings to be full siblings not half? I mean if they had different mothers or fathers…
for that matter is there anything that requires them to be biological siblings?
I’ll go hide now before the rabid fans come after me.
Summer Brooks says
Yes, adoption could be a reason, but you’d think after the stink that was raised by an offhanded comment about adoption from The Avengers that the Disney/Marvel folks might want to avoid that route for a while… especially in a character situation where it isn’t necessary or needed…
Laith Preston says
Agreed, but I wasn’t specifically meaning adoption but it is a good point.
my main point was I didn’t recall anything specific in the canon that precluded such a change.
I wouldn’t do it if I was them but…
Summer Brooks says
I mentioned this in the other article on the FF casting, and the difference with messing with canon in this case is that the Fantastic Four was always more than just another superhero team… they were family first: Sue and Johnny were brother & sister, Ben was like a brother to Reed, and of course, Sue eventually married Reed.
If you screw up that core “family” part of the story, you make them into just another team, which completely destroys a huge part of what makes the Fantastic Four who they are.
If they make a reasonable effort to keep it a family group, I’m good with it. If they don’t, the movie will make them “just another Marvel team”, and that would be unforgivably stupid.
