The family-friendly animated feature The Croods cleaned up at the box office this weekend, taking in $44.7 million in its opening weekend.
It was followed by another new release, Olympus Has Fallen in second with $30.5 million.
It is the first time this year that two films have topped $30 million in ticket sales in the same weekend.
Oz the Great and Powerful sold an additional $22 million in tickets over the weekend, placing third Fourth place went to The Call with $8.7 million and fifth place went to the new comedy Admission with $6.4 million.
