Former BBC designer Ray Cusick died in his sleep on Thursday, he was 84.

You may not know his name, but you are certain to be familiar with one of his most recognizable creations. Cusick gave form to the iconic villains, created by Terry Nation, the Daleks. The evil pepper pots have thrilled generations of science fiction fans as they’ve gone head to eye-stalk with The Doctor repeatedly over the past 50 years.

David Graham, who created the original voice of the Daleks, said Cusick was responsible for “one of the most iconic designs of television sci-fi.”

From their introduction in the second Doctor Who adventure “The Daleks”, through to the recent season and “Asylum of the Daleks”, Cusick’s design has stood the test of time. One thing is certain, his legacy will live on.
