The remake of Yellow Submarine is sunk.
Director Robert Zemeckis has decided to abandon the proposed remake of the classic Beatles film. The new version was intended to be a motion-capture animated feature and has been in development in Hollywood for the past couple of years.
The remake would see Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell take over for John, Paul, George and Ringo in the film and was set to include song by the Beatles in the score.
Disney is said to have got cold feet about the project given the price tag associated with the film and the flop of several recent Zemeckis motion-capture animation films including Mars Needs Moms.
“That would have been a great one to bring the Beatles back to life. But it’s probably better not to be remade—you’re always behind the 8-ball when do you a remake. It gets harder and harder [to make movies],” Zemeckis said.

Didn’t he mean to say “It gets harder and harder [to REMAKE movies]”?
If only THAT were true.

sadly, it’s probably easily applied to both versions of that statement. There’s a lot of broken spots in the system, and no one has any idea how to just let the system fall completely apart and build something entirely new from the debris.
Think of how many awesome movies were made back before the mid-90s that would never even get off the pitch table these days because the concept is too small or the niche was too quirky or they have no idea how to spend $100 million on marketing for it.
I really wish someone could do a research project and dig into the numbers behind the box office numbers; find out the actual total numbers of tickets sold for butts in seats watching the screens over the years (and also keeping track of how many screens total a film showed on as well as how many screens were active around the country) AND find a way to start tracking those numbers now for comparison.
I bet that would be a fun project actually…
