Woodley To Star in “Divergent”

While her TV series The Secret Life of the American Teenager has been given a pink slip by ABC Family, that doesn’t mean actress Shailene Woodley will be out of work for long.

Last week, we reported that Woodley had been cast as Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man sequel.

Now comes word that Woodley is in talks to join another high profile movie project.  According to the Hollywood Reporter, Woodley is the leading candidate to play the lead in the upcoming big-screen version of Divergent.

Based on the best-selling novel by Veronica Roth, Divergent is set in a future society that is divided into factions based on human traits.

Woodley will star as a 16-year old who leaves her group to join a rival faction and falls in love with a young man.

Woodley initially had scheduling issues as an obstacle to the dealmaking, having had offers to play both Mary Jane and the Divergent lead. But the Mary Jane role is proving to be only a very small part in Amazing Spider-Man 2 but blossoms into an integral lead for the planned third movie as the studio seeks to build to the classic “Death of Gwen Stacy” story.
