The big news of the day is that Joss Whedon is coming back to TV.

Variety reports that Whedon is developing a new series centering around SHIELD for ABC.  Whedon will help write the pilot with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, and will stay on to help develop the broad strokes. Assuming it’s picked up, Jed and Tancharoen would join Jeph Loeb and Jeffrey Bell as executive producers.

The series will take place within the Marvel movie continuity, though it will be independent of the big-screen Marvel films.  It’s unlikely we’ll see the likes of Iron Man or Captain America make a guest appearance on the show.

ABC is putting the series into production immediately.

As soon as we know more, we’ll let you know.
