The Hulk (and the rest of The Avengers) smashed at the box-office again this weekend.
This time it was another box office record and the competition from Johnny Depp. The Avengers took in $103.2 million over the weekend, setting a record for the second weekend box office earnings by a movie. The movie has now taken in $373.2 million domestically and $628.9 million overseas and made over a billion dollars in nineteen days world-wide.
In distant second was Dark Shadows from Tim Burton and Depp. The film took in $28.8 million, which was at the low end of estimates from those in Hollywood.
The comedy Think Like a Man was third with $6.3 million, followed by The Hunger Games with $4.4 million. The romance The Lucky One rounded out the top 5 with $4.1 million.
Final figures are due Monday.
The Avengers kept Hollywood’s ticket sales robust. Revenues are up 18% over the same time last year, while attendance is up 20%, Hollywood.com says.

Now that Joss Whedon has made a ton of billions for studio execs with his Avengers movie – think they could give him some spare pocket change for another Serenity film? What? I can always hope.

Would be nice, but probably a pipe dream…

I believe more Dr Horrible was much higher up on his to-do list, and I can live with that.

Same here, more of the good Dr. would be fun.

People are more selective about what they see these days…I know from my own standpoint I can’t afford to see everything that comes out anymore…so I only go to those movies that get good buzz that I’m already interested in seeing. People may be choosing where to put their entertainment money and right now Avengers has better word of mouth.
As for a Serenity film…sounds great but personally I would prefer to see a new Firefly series on tv. I can dream.

To paraphrase Yogi Berra “Nobody goes to the movies anymore. It’s too crowded.”

I think people are just expecting another Tim Burton/Johnny Depp campy movie. I will say I was pleasantly surprised by it yesterday when I went with the wife to see it. She is a die hard Depp fan, she also loves Cruise and she did marry me so she doesn’t have the best taste……
Anyway, I was dreading this movie ever since I first heard about it on Slice way back when. I remembered watching Dark Shadows as a kid on the old UHF stations back in the 70’s. I wasn’t a fan but liked it, even as a kid. I will say this movie had it’s funny parts but it wasn’t Scissor Hands/Wonka campy. I would go so far to say it is about as close to a serious film Burton has made that I know of. It had it’s moments but was somewhat, almost, nearly, kinda, sorta had some elements of drama to the story.
And, he didn’t sashay anywhere he walked…..
