One of the most popular pieces of future tech from Back to the Future Part II is the hoverboard.
For years, it was rumored that Matel has a working hoverboard but wouldn’t release it to the public. That was an urban rumor started by a comment made by Robert Zemeckis during pre-publicity for the film, but it stuck.
Now fans may finally get a chance to own a hoverboard from the film. Though you may be disappointed to learn the hoverboard won’t hover like Marty’s did in the film.
According to Toy Fair, Matel will release a limited edition series of the toy later this year. The hoverboards will be ”movie accurate” and will “glide on most surfaces”. It will even include a hole where Marty rips off handlebars.
The limited edition item will be available for pre-order from March 1-20, and will be shipped in time for the holiday season later this year. A price has yet to be confirmed for the boards.
“Because this is such a high-cost item, there will be a minimum number of orders required to go into production,” Mattel said in a press release. “If we don’t receive the minimum orders, we won’t go into production and customers will not be charged. The price will be announced later this month.”
