A long holiday weekend didn’t mean a big bottom line for Hollywood.
Mark Wahlberg’s new movie Contraband took the top spot at the box-office with $24.1 million.
Many analysts expected the 3-D remake of 1991’sBeauty and the Beast to take the top spot, though its $18.5 million haul marks a strong start and met most projections.
Subers says Beast is “the latest confirmation that 3-D re-releases can be a very profitable endeavor.”
Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol dropped to third with $11.5 million. The fourth installment of the Tom Cruise franchise has earned $186.7 million.
The only other major newcomer, Dolly Parton comedy Joyful Noise, took fourth place with $11.3 million, meeting most of its modest expectations. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was fifth with $8.4 million.
