For the second weekend in a row, audiences accepted Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol as their box-office mission. The film took in $38.3 million over the New Year’s weekend, strong enough for first place.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was second with $26.5 million, lifting its three-week total to $136.5 million.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked claimed the kid crowd and $21 million, good for third place. The sequel has done $97.4 million.
Steven Spielberg’s War Horse was fourth with $19.2 million, bringing its overall gross to $45.2 million.
The David Fincher drama The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was fifth with $19 million, lifting its total to $60 million
