ABC’s Once Upon a Time got off to a solid start in the ratings Sunday, delivering 12.8 million viewers. That makes it the highest rated drama debut of the season.
And while the show is based on fairy tales, actress Jennifer Morrison says it’s grounded in reality and reflects real life.
“We’re in a time in our lives where the economy’s kind of tough and jobs are tough [and there's] a lot of struggles people are facing,” she said.
“In a sense, our show really represents that in the curse that is on the characters, and the hope that there is a way out, that you can band together and find a way out.”
Morrison added that there is more to Once Upon a Time than the fairy-tale premise, suggesting that the show has “universal” themes.
“It’s relationship-driven,” she insisted. “There is this sort of underlying universal thing.”

lol hope for the economy being compared to a fairy tale
Good start to the series though...reminded me a little of Haven.
While I enjoyed 'Once Upon A Time' I found myself thinking that something was lacking... that some necessary cohesion was missing. I hope that that was just an issue found only in the pilot, or I may find myself forgetting to watch because it lacks that 'compelling' quality. Here's hoping... after all, Robert Carlyle needs a job!
I surfed into the middle of the show last Sunday and unexpectedly found myself enjoying it. The presence of Jennifer Morrison helps on that account - I always liked her on "House." I wound up going back and watching the whole episode through my cable company's on demand service.
I note that they're using the Disney versions of the fairy tales for background. Being on Disney-owned ABC, I guess they have the proper intellectual property rights.
OUaT was crap, in my opinion. Badly written, badly paced. There's some interesting ideas in play, but there's no way I'm wading through the bad here just to find out about the interesting. Life is too short.
