It’s the season for scary movies.
Paranormal Activity 3 scared up $53 million at the box-office this weekend, good enough to take the top spot. It’s the third straight number one opening for the franchise. Given how profitable the films are, it’s likely there will be a fourth installment next Halloween.
And unless its numbers drop significantly in the days before Halloween, the third installment could eclipse $100 million.
The boxing robots family film Real Steel continued to play well, taking second place with $11.3 million and lifting its overall revenues to $67.2 million.
The musical remake Footloose was third with $10.9 million, lifting its total to $30.9 million.
The action newcomer The Three Musketeers, which did not screen for critics, did not screen for many moviegoers, either. Analysts projected the film to do $13 million, but the swashbuckler did $8.8 million, mustering fourth place. The George Clooney political thriller Ides of March was fifth with $4.9 million.
The British spy spoof Johnny English Reborn was neither shaken nor stirred in theaters, managing just eighth place with $3.8 million, less than half most projections.
