Fifty-year-old husband and father Jonathan Brown spent twelve years studying Klingon. Not only has he mastered the language created for the Star Trek universe, but he also says its helped cure his dyslexia.
Brown is the lead linguist on a learning Klingon series of CDs released by the Klingon Language Institute and, in the process of writing the scripts and recording the lessons, taught himself a new way for dealing with his own dyslexia.
“Working on the translation has helped me understand where I’ve been having problems all my life with languages, I realised I’d been trying to remember the words in the name part of my brain and because I can’t remember names, I can’t remember the words,” he tells the BBC. “With the Klingon language games used on the CD, I tended to put words into a different place and it went into my long term memory.”
