When Mass Effects jumps from video games to the silver-screen, it will have a new story.
Legendary Pictures will reportedly keep some of the characters from the game but instead of following the storyline in the game, they’ll create their own for the feature film. Legendary is reportedly working with BioWare, the maker of the game, on the storyline.
The movie will focus on Commander Shepard.
Legendary is hoping that the game franchise can translate into a movie franchise.

I'll hold out hope since if BioWare is involved they can weave a good story, but I think a new story is the best idea. I would like to see maybe a side story about a whole new character, or maybe stuff from Shephard's past, unforunately using Shephard at all will tick off many a fan as they can craft their backsotry for him/her. I'd say make it a prequel about the earlier wars/exploration described in the game.
Sean: But a prequel by default would mean no Tali or Garrus or Joker (unless it's a prequel to the 2nd game, i.e. after Sovereign but before the destruction of the 1st Normandy).
Like the idea of a new story, that means they can still make Mass Effect 1/2/3 into the kickass HBO TV series I have in my mind!
meh...I think a new story in the Mass Effect universe is fine but I think to focus on Shepard would be a mistake. Lot of people that played the game would want at the very least the characters from the first game in it and if they make the story before Mass Effect 1 those characters wouldn't be included...if they make it after ME3...how can you possibly top the storyline of the ME trilogy. Already heard that some people are complaining because the word is that if they have Joker in it Seth Green won't be playing him...I really think they would have done better to go with a new hero set sometime after the reapers...maybe a descendent of Shepard. With the way they've decided to go they may get new people to love ME that are unfamiliar with the game but I think a lot of die-hard fans may be disappointed. Then again with it being a movie made from a video game it may just be another dud in a long list of "made from game" movies that are disasters. And no having Bioware involved doesn't make it a sure thing.
