We do want to hear your comments and feedback… No, really, we do!
Pay no attention to how much Mike grumbles about them — you know, that guy sitting in the dark corner with all of the blinky lights, the knobs and the Scotch.
This week, Mike, Brian, Meghan, Noah and Tim respond to the questions and comments posed by your voicemail submissions, and yes, it happened just like that: one single listener complained several times to our sponsor that their books weren’t “suitable” for Slice of SciFi, and our sponsor bailed. Thus, you’re gonna hear MORE ads and MORE begging. You’re welcome.
As always, BEWARE SPOILERS!!

That really sucks what happened between you and Carina Press and the sponsorship for the show. It was just one ad, and if it helps pay the show than so be it. To have a listener take so much offense to that one ad to do that to you guys was wrong. Hopefully you guys find a new sponsor soon, and it doesn’t matter who you get. If they help pay the bills than that’s what is important. Already lost a great show this week, don’t want to lose you guys as well.

Whoever complained about Carina Press ads should have their heads and lives examined with a deep anal probe. It was a perfect fit and I’m also a little upset with Carina for allowing a few negative comments to sway them away, but they are in business to attract not repel so I get it. That being said, we need advertisers if we are to continue. I started with you guys in the very beginning back in March 2005 and we have been offering this great show for free for a long time now. We were one of the foundational podcasts back when this was a pretty new media and, unlike a few of those who started about the same time and many that have come on the scene since, our shows have remained free and most of the cost coming out of the pockets of those closely associated and many of us have given our time freely because we love the media and genre.
That being said, it is time, in my humble opinion, that we move on to a subscription based only format. Some of the other popular podcasts (Carolla, Pollak, and others) have done so and I think it might be time for us to do the same and allow the shows to stand on their own merit. Allow those who wish to pay per episode or month or however, then so be it.
The only other thing that might bring in more revenue and really piss off those who think this media should be totally free because they are basically cheap bastards (there, I said exactly what many are already thinking) is run non-related ads such as adult diapers or feminine hygiene products every 10minutes of broadcast time.

Dear person who complained,
First, I’d like you to stop listening to whatever you’re listening to right now, and…
…well, that’s it. You may not be a petty, small-minded moron, but you have acted like one in this case, and I hope that you are deeply ashamed of yourself. I also hope that magical flying ponies will poop gold nuggets, and that George Lucas will hire someone better to write his scripts for him.

last time I got a new debit card, my paypal info expired and I dropped off of my subscription. This episode shocked me back into renewing my subscription and I hope in several months I can increase my monthly donation. I have spent hours on two minutes of conent in the past and I can only imagine the kind of work that goes into 90 minutes of conent. Anytime I hear that one of my favorite home made podcasts gets a sponsor I practically cheer because I like knowing that the hard work is either paying off in some way or at least some of the costs are mitigated. If, however, someone is so opposed to podcasters both doing what they love AND getting some compensation, then I suggest those opposed create their own 90 minutes of conent a week and pay all of their costs out of pocket. Also I really don’t feel it’s seeling out when the sponsor is well targeted to the audience. And espcially when the sponsor is also indepentant from the media giants.

Maybe you guys can come up with a compromise with the issue on whether or not the show should be free. Offer ad free podcasts for a subscription fee. Then you can have the free podcasts with ads.
