Davies: Jack Harkness Isn't Gay

Producer Russell T. Davies says that he may have played up the homosexual side to Captain Jack Harkness a bit too much.

Davies says that the character is “omni-sexual” and that he has no preference of men or women.

“I think by the end of this series I’ll have to give interviews stressing that Jack is omnisexual and not just gay; we’ve failed slightly with the ladies this time. And I don’t say that lightly either—we’re telling some genuine love stories, passionate love stories as well as having some fun with the character. There’s one relationship as the series develops that becomes in many ways the spine of the whole thing; the character [of Captain Jack] has not been calmed down, or censored, or compromised in any way,” Davies says.

Torchwood: Miracle Day is about so much more than the adventures (and exploits) of Captain Jack. It’s about what happens to the world when suddenly no one dies. As a result, Davies said, “we’re all left with a health care system that stops up. Because the world kind of depends on people dying—food and hospitals and assistance sort of depend on the regular turnover of death, so when that stops, you see what happens to the whole of society. And that’s what Torchwood has got to tackle.”

Viewers will be pleased to know that Torchwood gets to the bottom of this mystery—and hopefully solves it—in the span of this 10-episode season. Davies said, “It’s worth pointing out that there’s an ending. It’s not one of those things where we tell you we’ll give you the solution in five years’ time.”

I kinda just always assumed they played the character toward his natural instinct. He is a Homosexual in real life after all.

I think everyone just assumes he's gay because of Ianto (still wish he hadn't died)...and why do they have to kill everybody all the time. The omni-sexual thing was more evident on Dr. Who anyway.

This isn't anything new to me regarding Jack's sexuality. It had been made clear from pretty early on that if it walked and breathed that it was fair game, regardless of gender.

funny how everyone believes in free speech until the speech is something that they do not agree with. Way to practice sensorship ya freaking communists...

yes the moderators deleted my comments. they cannot handle the truth. lol. sad really sad.

When you have an openly gay star, an openly gay executive producer, and a romantic storyline involving two men, it's not surprising that some fans may consider Jack to be gay. Especially if they don't also watch Doctor Who and see all of the captain's lady-flirting.

I don't think that's a problem, as such, but it does send a bit of a strange message to the audience that Jack's primary attractions are mostly female on the kids' show and mostly male on the adult show, rather than a more even split on both.

He's in a relationship with a guy when we first meet him on Doctor Who. Remember the soldier he visits? He's a big flirt with everyone, but they didn't wait until Torchwood to introduce a guy into the mix.

Why does RTD need to clarify this point? I thought fans of Captain Jack (most of us) already knew or assumed this. For me, it goes back to what The Doctor said in "The Empty Child". He also said to Rose "and they danced" when talking about the human race spreading out and Jack being a "51st Century Kind Of Guy" So I honestly don't know why there needs to be any clarification.

I really hope that the brain dead media doesn't make a big deal about this. I can see some Americans whining about this already.

This country as a whole cannot handle it. Personally I do not care either way. Hell, I was not aware that RTD was gay but then agian who cares!!!!! I like the actor and the character. If the character is Omni(bi), gay, straight who cares if it is done well. Now if they want to attract a more female audience as the women love Jack as well this is also good. Anyone honest enough with themself probably has/had a love for the same sex at one time or another in their lives if they are honest with themselves, even if it is called man love :)

  11. John says:

It's not called Man Love anymore, they are called Bromances. :)

I can't say I've ever had one. OK, Maybe Sulu...

I really hope this issue doesn't become an "issue" with the series coming to the States. I'd really hate it to be the reason it doesn't do well here.
