A new fashion firm is offering a bikini that is custom made to fit its wearer.
Design company Continuum Fashion says it can print out a bikini on a 3D printer that is both comfortable and sturdy.
The N12 bikini, named after the Nylon 12 fabric used to make it, is made up of hundreds of tiny discs and created through a 3D printing process. Pieces of the bikini are 0.7 mm thick and snap together without sewing, reports TG Daily.
“Designing the bikini was an endeavor of pushing the capabilities of the machine as well as working with constraints,” says Continuum cofounder Jenna Fizel. “A bikini was the natural choice to start with for 3D printed fashion, due to the low amount of material needed. The printer also has a set bounding box, and our original bikini design exactly fit within the print area in a single piece.”
Fizel says that it’s more efficient to print a bikini in four pieces and snap it together. You can order the bikini in a variety of sizes on the company’s web site. It will be printed out and shipped to you, but be warned, the price tag is high.
And while it’s not yet possible to print out your own bikini at home, as 3D printers become a household item, we could soon be printed out our own clothes at home.
“3D printing technology is really only in its infancy, and it is extraordinarily exciting to imagine what we can do as its capabilities improve,” says Fizel. “Right now, the challenges in the process also become points of inspiration. We have plans to do a dress, perhaps in modular pieces, and shoes.”
And what will a custom bikini set you back? The design company’s site has the top listed for $250-300 and the bottoms for $200.
