Disney Gives Greenlight to Third "Tron"

A third Tron movie is happening. And this time fans won’t have to wait as long between installments.

Disney has tapped David DiGilio to write the screenplay for the sequel to Tron: Legacy.

DiGilio is also working on a sci-fi series for cable outlet Showtime.

The Tron sequel is an intriguing proposition for Disney. Despite Tron: Legacy‘s high cost and lukewarm response from certain quarters, it grossed more than $400 million worldwide, not enough of a slamdunk to make a sequel an automatic go but enough to show an interest in that world exists.

Also helping would be the R&D that went into building Legacy, whose base of designs and technology would serve to lower the costs of any sequel.

  1. Oh. OK... I'm not sure why I immediately thought we skipped over a sequel... then I remembered Legacy was the sequel.

Crazy morning, and it hasn't started yet.

Funny, Legacy took $400 million worldwide, but Disney backed out of funding the Chronicles of Narnia films after the second one took the SAME amount of money.

    The Mouse sickens me.

It's all about bean counting. On the Chronicles of Narnia Disney had to share the money since they didn't own the property and they were co-producing with WaldenMedia. Tron is 100% Disney. When you aren't splitting the money you don't have to make as much. They are also banking on using Tron as the basis for a redo of some of their attraction in the Tomorrowland sections of their parks. This vested interest makes Tron something they are again more willing to invest in.

I am quite pleased by this. I was an enormous fan of the first TRON film and was most pleased when I saw Legacy...

I am hopeful that many of the Easter Eggs on the Legacy DVD will form the foundation of the third film.
