In the wake of the colossal failure of Mars Needs Mom, Disney has decided to part ways with Robert Zemeckis’ next motion capture project. The studio announced yesterday that it has decided not to proceed with the remake of Yellow Submarine.
The decision leaves Zemeckis free to shop the project to other studios. Though the price tag associated with the film and the box-office bomb of Mars may have other studios wary to sign on to the project.
The film was to be a remake of the popular Beatles film from the 60s. Zemeckis was planning to use motion capture to re-create the film.
The plan was to use 16 Beatles songs in the film, which was to employ cutting-edge motion-capture technology similar to Zemeckis’ Beowulf, A Christmas Carol and Mars Needs Moms. Zemeckis secured the cooperation of Apple Corps, which controls the rights to the rock group’s library.
According to sources, Zemeckis left town over the weekend, flying to Montana to regroup. He is said to be eyeing a live-action project to direct. But part of the regrouping process could include finding a new home for Submarine.
