Sean From Edwards says
This is a hard one, I grew up with Baker and he is who I always think of when I think of Dr Who, but at the same time I think that the Eccelston/Tennant runs were some of the best television ever, decisions, decisions.
moylan says
it would have to be tom baker.
#1 first doctor who i saw on tv as a kid
#2 doctor represented in the simpsons when sideshow bob tried to ban tv
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/File:Simpsons_Doctor_Who.jpg
#3 i also loved tom baker as red beard rum on blackadder. long on beard, short on legs
#4 and the fuss people made when they had a txt to speech service using tom bakers voice in 2006.

Sam says
Wow this is a tough poll. I liked them all in their own special way, however, Tom Baker still rates #1 with me, David Tennant a close second and Christopher Eccleston at third.
Robin says
I refuse to answer this question on the grounds that they are all The Doctor. My favorite is whichever one I’m watching. 🙂
(That said, I most often go back to either Pertwee, Davison, McCoy, or Tennant because I love their relationships with their respective companions.)
VyseN1 says
Tough poll. For classic who I go with Jon Pertwee. For new who, my current choice is Eccleston, though Matt Smith is challenging that.
TechRavingMad says
Can you make a high res wallpaper (16×9) of the doctorwhothe11doctors.JPG? I would LOVE to have that as a background.
VJB says
Tom Baker, of course. The definitive Doctor. He was a great Marshwiggle in the BBC Narnia video too. : )
Arkle says
Like VyseN1 I also use two categories; Fave Classic Doctor, and Fave New Doctor. The latter, David Tennant. The former, Peter Davison. Appropriate seeing as Tennant modeled his performance on Davison.
Andrew Clark says
I think any Whovian worth his/her salt would refuse to answer that question. I think the best Doctor would have to go to the late great William Hartnell. if it wasn’t for his original incarnation 47 years ago, we wouldn’t be sat talking about The Doctor in cyberspace today.
I certainly don’t have a favourite one.

Eddie says
Can’t vote on this one. Grew up with Baker and he is the face I see in my head when Dr. Who is mentioned. Never really saw any of the others until the “re-boot” I have liked all three “new” doctors quite a bit. Polls are supposed to be easy!
Eddie says
I would like to second the request for a Hi-Rez picture. that is fantastic! Props to the artist!
Kernewek Exile says
Like so many before me I refuse to vote. All of them are excellent. On the subject of assistants I’d have to say that Zoe has a special place in my heart, as does Adric for very, very different reasons.
Rincewind1 says
In no particular order….. Baker, Tennant, Eccleston. Would be nice if you could vote for two or three and see who comes out on top
Mich67 says
Have to agree with Robin on this one…they are all the doctor…how could you possibly choose?
The only two I ever saw growing up were Tom and Colin Baker and although I understand the loyalty some people have towards the older versions I think that the scripts have made the more recent doctors much more interesting character wise.
In that respect I think Tennant got the best personal scripts…he always seemed a much more tormented Doctor than any of the rest(of those I’ve watched). He’s an excellent actor as well. I think the overall storyline for Matt Smith’s Doctor has been amazing…the season 5 finale kept me on the edge of my seat.. and who couldn’t love Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor.
And while I can’t really choose my favorite Doctor…I can choose my favorite companion…hands down…Rose Tyler.
meatball says
I agree with those who abstain from voting. The Doctor is The Doctor, and although I have a sentimental attachment to more than one, placing one at the top is impossible.
Now, if you said LEAST favourite, well, that would easy. I’ll give you a hint: His last name is Baker, and his first name isn’t Tom. 🙂
David Hill says
No Peter Cushing in this poll????????????
Michael Hickerson says
I find it interesting the debate over whether Whovians are allowed to have a favorite or not.
As a long time Whovian, I like each Doctor for a different reason. But I still have those I prefer and that are my favorites.
And I don’t think anyone would question my status as a true fan of the series.
If you do, you should probably look around at the news stories on this site a bit and get back to me….
Dipstick says
Peter Davison is my favorite Doctor, but Tom Baker’s is my favorite era of the show. (Couldn’t stand most of the Fifth Doctor’s companions.)
Shane says
I grew up watching Baker, so he’ll always be my favorite, but Tennant is a close 2nd!! I loved his run! Eccleston did a great job as well. Too bad his run wasn’t longer. Paul Mcgann was definitely short changed on his run. I think he could have been great!
SaMM says
I’m with Michael Hickerson on this one.
SaMM says
How the heck do you get a -2 rating on a poll? As in “William Hartnell (-2%)”.
KG from DC says
Tom Baker is by far my favorite Doctor, but David Tennant brought a great spirit to the character that’s undeniable. Right now, I’m loving Matt Smith and Amy Pond. One of the greatest pair in the Doctor’s history. Much more compelling than David and Rose.
Joy says
all of them are great so I will never choose.
James says
i first met the Dr. as David Tennant so not only producing some of my favorite quotes and scene he gets my vote. non the less when i saw Tom Baker he made an excellent Dr and almost won my vote i have however not watched every Dr including 11, 8, 7, 2, 1 so i may be slightly bias.
heyhey says
for me i am young so have never seen the doctors previous to it being re-vamped but i thought david tennant epitomised everything the doctor should be i’ve never seen anyone so perfect for a roll in my life i completely forgot that he was an actor and for those 50 odd minutes i believed he was the character completely. he seemed so full of knowledge too where matt smith seems less alien like and i find it much harder to get used to him as the doctor. i do like him but i just miss david so much once he left i found it so hard to get used to the thought of anyone else as my favourite tv character.
does anyone agree with me? 🙂
SittingOnTheMoon says
I completly agree with you!! the 10th Doctor David Tennet is amazing he is such a great actor he also was the first doctor I saw!! I really love him! i also feel it a bit hard to get used to the new doctor Matt Smith but oh well. i remember crying when David Tennet regenerated hehe! 🙂 hope u didnt find that annoying i just wanted to reply 🙂
mebeAteen says
Matt Smith has to be the best doctor of them all! my mom loves Tom Baker though, i just love how the 11th doctor is goofy and clever and hes got swag!!! lol
bow ties are cool
stetsons are cool
and fezzes are definitely COOL
of and i love amy and rory
Jon says
That’s tough. And to be fair I’ve only recently gotten into Dr. Who. I’ve been working backwards and haven’t gotten all the way back to the first 3 doctors yet. Each one brought something new and cool to the table and none of them were bad. That said, I prefer David Tennant for two reasons. First, in a few episodes we see the darker side of the Doctor bleed through, which I find very relatable. Here’s an ancient man who has seen his whole race die, seen both beautiful and horrible things. He’s bound to have some baggage, and when we see David show it he’s a bit darker, colder, grittier about it than say Smith or any of the others who just get… shouty. Second, and this is totally unrelated- he reminds me of Chris Barrie, who I also think is brilliant (and who would make a great Doctor in his own right, I think).
Cassie says
I have to say Matt Smith. He was the first Doctor I saw. I love his humor and the fun, protective, understanding way he interacts with his companions. I love his wit, his goofiness, the quick and mixed up but thoughtful way he solves problems, and his love of bowties.
Micah says
I would say Christopher Eccleston. He was the first Doctor I ever saw and I still absolutely love his run, though I do really like the other two Doctors I’ve watched. (Tennant and Smith.)
Blayze Kohime says
I was actually really fond of the 2nd, so it’s too bad so many of his episodes were lost. I liked how he acted like a complete idiot until the very last moment when all his idiocy turned out to have been part of a plan (though he often denied that it had been). He was similar to the 11th in some ways, which is one reason I love 11, except that 11 has the advantage of everyone in the universe already being intimidated by him while 2 caught them completely by surprise when he beat them.
I wouldn’t mind seeing some of the classic doctors (though obviously many would need different actors) in a higher budget modern type production.
AJ says
They say that everybody’s favorite Doctor is the first one they saw, or the one they grew up with. Absolutely true. Tom Baker is my favorite, followed by Christopher Eccleston. But I pretty much never met a Dr. Who that I didn’t like.
lykishkeane says
I love Christopher Eccleston then followed by David Tennant….^^
I love Eccleston’s Doctor because he seemed different from all of them.. He looked stern and not flamboyant at all.. but when he started to talk and act I just said.. “yeah he is definitely The Doctor”
I want to watch the older Doctor Who but I’m having difficult time looking for a site where I can watch it… 🙂
I just love Doctor Who!
Michael Hickerson says
Watching classic Who isn’t that difficult….most of it is out on DVD and easily rented via Netflix.
Kane says
Tom Baker, followed by Patrick Troughton, followed by Sylvester McCoy. My favourite New Series Doctor is David Tennant, closely followed by Matt Smith.
It’s a shame William Hartnell isn’t higher on this poll. He was my Doctor, back in 1963 when I was 7.
I’ve seen every episode when it broadcast with my parents, then children, and then grandchildren, except for The Android Invasion. (We were on holiday in Australia)
Marci Jill says
This is a tough one. I grew up with Tom Baker, so he was my favorite until the revamp. He was eccentric, wild and loved that scarf. I watched the show on PBS when I was a kid.
I have loved all of the new Doctors in their own way. At first I disliked Eccleston, but now I keep watching the episodes he did and wish he did two more seasons like Tennant and Smith.
I really do love Eccleston because he was so unlike many of the other Doctors. At first glance he seemed so straight-laced. But once he started talking he was so quirky and so the Doctor. I especially loved the dynamic between Eccleston, Piper and Barrowman.
Eccleston had made favorite quotes.
Blake Duckworth says
BBC done a pretty good job in casting doctors for the show.
“Enemy Within” The film was the first attempt to revive Doctor Who, following its suspension in 1989. It was intended as a back-door pilot for a new American-produced Doctor Who TV series, and introduced Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor in his only televised appearance as the character. Although a ratings success in the United Kingdom, the film did not fare well on American television, and no series was commissioned. To bad really, because it would have been of interest to me to see McGann progress further in his doctor who character, rather then a one time film.
Tom baker was a very good doctor with his charm and smiles, of course who can forget ” would you like a jelly baby” as his characters catch phrase.
But my favorite doctor of all time was Jon Pertwee better known as the third doctor. I guess you could say I connected the most with his character.
As the Third Doctor, Pertwee frequently wore velvet smoking coats in various solid colors, usually with color-coordinated trousers, and also wore frilled shirts. Pertwees doctor was stuck on earth through the majority of the seasons and drove around in his yellow car he named Bessie.
Teach says
Matt SMith … By a long shot! He is funny, quirky and sweet. I’ll miss this doctor.
James T. Savidge says
My favorie is Sylvester McCoy because in large part I think that the writers finally got it right in his last season.
In those stories I started to think: You know, this guy isn’t human, and his agenda doesn’t always include _us_!
Edward Blakey says
Tom Baker is by far my favorite, I started Watching Dr Who in the late 70s and he was the one who really got me interested in the series. He is followed ( close 2nd) by Pertwee..also liked the First Dr and the second one also. Hey..I’m old..humor me.
