Enjoy “Caprica” while you can. Once the first season ends it run, so does the show.
SyFy has canceled the “Battlestar Galactica” spin-off reports EW’s Michael Ausiello.
Of course, you may have to work to find the final episodes. SyFy will pull the series from its schedule following next Tuesday’s episode.
“The remaining first run episodes of ‘Caprica’ – airing Tuesdays at 10/9c – will be removed from the schedule as of next Tuesday, November 2,” said the network in a statement. “These final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, and will conclude the run of the series.”
“We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series,” said Mark Stern, EVP of original programming at Syfy. “Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, ‘Caprica’ has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”
No word yet on if season one ends on a cliffhanger and if the series might get a movie to wrap-up the storylines.
Mark says
Not surprised. I just got around to watching the first of the new shows and it was unbelievably BORING! It felt like half the show was spent just showing people sitting around or slowly walking around just full of angst or contemplation with absolutely nothing happening. This is not good TV storytelling. I barely made it through that episode and promptly deleted the other episodes and my Tivo season pass.
VyseN1 says
Not surprised. SyFy has to learn that can’t split up seasons so much with these serialized shows, it just destroys any momentum you have. They are probably imitating what USA does. But the thing is, USA shows have almost no story arc, they are all episodic for the most part. You can break a season of a show like “Psych” up, but it hurts serialized shows such as this one.
VyseN1 says
Also, not to mention that the dreadful series finale of BSG still left a bad impression for the franchise as a whole.
Mic7 says
Not surprising at all…the show moved too slow. The only pickup in it I felt personally came when Joseph Adama was running around New Cap city trying to find Tamara…everything else was boring. Sad to say I won’t miss it. This is also not surprising news in the wake of SyFy giving the green light to another BSG series. I figured when I heard about it that it wouldn’t be long before they put the ax to Caprica.
AndyMac says
Bastards! Why can’t they just show the last 5 episodes now?!? Stupid-ass-no-good-idiotic-dumb-f**ks. What, is the show keeping them from putting on more wrestling or ghost hunting shows? There’s less and less and less that I want to see on this network. They are down to Eureka and SGU at this point. When those are gone, so am I.
They don’t even have good reruns on during the week anymore. Screw them.
VyseN1 says
The most perplexing thing is why are they not showing the final episodes this year. You just cancelled the show, it makes no sense to delay airing these episodes until 2011.
Dave in NY says
I disagree that USA’s shows are not serialized. While they are mostly procedurals, Psych, Burn Notice, and White Collar have a larger story arc.
The good thing they do is wrap up a smaller arc at the mid-season break with either a cliff-hanger that makes us come back for more, and/or gives us some wrap-up to the mini-plot so we are willing to wait and speculate until the second half returns.
Its worked out very well for USA, whose parent company owns SyFy.
Tom says
Well I liked it
Varley Volpo says
I liked it too.
Sihnon says
I also liked it.
VyseN1 says
Let me put it this way. The USA shows are much more accessible. You can jump into those shows at pretty much anytime. Caprica is not as accessible.
VyseN1 says
To compare with SyFy shows, the USA formula would probably work great with shows like Warehouse 13, Sanctuary, and Eureka, but not with shows like Caprica or Stargate: Universe.

“Bastards! Why can’t they just show the last 5 episodes now?!?”
It does seem odd that SyFy would pull it off the air. That’s something I’d expect more from FOX or the other non-cable networks. Usually SyFy (or the Sci-Fi Channel – which is actually what I still call it) airs the rest of the season regardless of whether it’s canceled or not. Look at “Stargate SG-1” and “Stargate Atlantis”. Those two were canceled early in their final seasons, yet the channel still aired the remaining fifteen or so episodes. So why don’t they just air the final episodes of this series too? It’s only five episodes.

While I’m not too surprised by this development, I also am a bit disappointed. Sometime a show should be allowed to run because, even though it may be a bit slow on the action front, the writing and acting for this one was superb. There should be room for shows of this production quality even if the numbers aren’t always there to please the sponsors.
Sometime the whimper can be enjoyable to watch, even if there is not much bang.
Alverant says
Prequels are always a bad idea in SF. First you have to worry about continuity which never goes right. Then, with advances in FX, what happened first chronologically looks better than what happened later (the original). Then you have to worry about the actors which, since making TV or movies takes so long, look noticeably older so you’ll probably have to go with new actors and new characters. And if you go with new characters, why not just have a whole new story and leave the original material alone?
Tim from RI says
Syfy should have kept both Caprica and SGU on Friday. They needed to air Wrestling on Friday. I’m a wrestling fan, but wrestling does not belong on SyFy. If Syfy cancels SGU I’m done with them. With that being said, I’m not to surprised Caprica is done. I still watch it, but its nothing like BSG. Its way to slow moving and its more like a soap opera. SGU is by far the best series on SyFy, well that and Eureka. I agree that taking it off for 6 months was dumb, and just FYI, the Season 1.5 dvd hits stores on 12-21 (before SyFy will air the rest).
Syfy is Sucking says
Come on Syfy! WTH, Ghost Hunters should have been gone 1st and wrestling and the other reality/non reality shows. This network used to be good. It was the only reason why I still kept a TV feed. F-it, I’ll just download SGU, W13 and Eurika. Everything else sucks, Santuary is a poorly written joke and belongs on Saturday with the rest of the crappy lineup.
Wake up Syfy, your real audiance of Nerds is going away!
kurt_eh says
@AndyMac Why can’t they just show the last 5 episodes now?!?
Unfortunately, it’s simple. November is sweeps month. I suspect they’d rather have somthing more (so called) high profile (at least to them) than have a series with what they deem to be low ratings running durring sweeps.
Bill from Albuquerque says
As Syfy turns into a clone of Fox, how long will it be before everything else the geeks watch on that channel be axed???? And yet another BSG???? I wonder when the press announcement that Syfy will be turning into an all wrestling all the time channel will be made before even that proves too expensive for them to air..

Reminds me of Galactica 1980.
The spin-off tries to ride the coat tails of it predecessor, but fails.
In actuality, the only aspect of the show I found captivating was the first episode spent in the Secondlife-makeshift Caprica City. I wish that had factored into the story more.
Not me says
It doesn’t surprise me. I couldn’t even get through the movie/pilot it was so terribly boring! Hopefully the next BSG series that was will be better and have some action.
AndyMac says
@Not me: Attitudes like that are one of the reason science fiction TV & movies are going into the crapper. The masses all want pretty space ships and explosions. Those things are not what makes good scifi. Good scifi is great stories and characters, not just action and special effects. “Moon” is a perfect example. Most people would find it boring because there were no explosions and no battles. But it tells a very compelling story that makes us question ourselves as a species and what we would do if we were in that situation.
Caprica could be a little slow at times but it wasn’t because it was missing action, it was because the story wasn’t moving forward as quickly as I might like. Even so, I would still like to see the events leading up to the Cylon War even more than I want to see the Cylon War.

That’s it! I’m done with this Channel. Perhaps even done with Cable. We fans clearly need a new medium. When networks pull this crap, it makes me less and less willing to invest my time into a new series. Why should I start watching the new BSG when I know its going to be pulled in a year? Waste of my time to invest myself.
Networks and producers need to get serious about finding a way to continue distributing canceled shows to their fans.
I am seriously wondering if I should now just stop watching SGU before I have that carpet yanked out from under me as well.
TV sucks, I need to go back to watching movies. Better yet, I’ll just wait for a series to run, then go back and and rent/download it when I know a whole story is going to be told.
You suck NBC.

Right. Which is why “the Masses” heralded that train wreck of a movie, “Star Trek”. (Yes-the new one) That movie was a slap in the face to real Sci-Fi.
I’d love to see a bunch of Producers get together, (Ron Moore would be perfect to lead this, as he gets the whole “real sci-fi” thing) and create a distribution outlet for REAL sci-fi. Not SyFy. I don’t care if its paid downloads, a Hulu type subscription, or ad supported and free, they need to get together and tell NBC to shove it. Think of how many people would subscribe. They promise us: No cut off stories, we promise them, we’ll pay for ’em!

Tim the Avatarless says
After wrestling and ghost hunting, lets finish off the season with a cancellation of an actual science fiction series. That leaves SG-U and some quasi-fantasy shows.
SyFy actually deserves to be pronounced more like “siffy” … a shortened version of the syphilis disease.
In a related note, the weather channel will show less weather news in lieu of more reality programming. NBC/Universal just keeps on keeping on.
Keiran Halcyon says
“Wake up Syfy, your real audiance of Nerds is going away!”
Therein lies the problem – NERDS DON’T BUY THINGS! By which I mean: obviously, nerds buy things, but ads don’t move nerds to buy the things being advertised – at least, not nearly to the extent that the “masses” do. That, and we’re not a very large demographic to begin with. The production of quality sci-fi just isn’t as cost effective as the production of wrestling.

This is what happened to Dollhouse.
The first season took too long to get to prime meat of the main storyline.
If Dollhouse started out with the original pilot episode Epitaph One and do less personality of the week B.S. episodes it would of started out strong.
Caprica did the same thing it took to long to give what the audience wanted CYLONS.
They should of started the series with more action making the Cylons first existing as drones controlled by humans using Holobands.
Make more references to the original BSG characters Adama was revealed, but did little with it, and Balter’s father was revealed in a news clip in the last episode.
The show was just getting good with the Cylons being used as assassins by the Torons or whatever that mafia is called.
If I were to make a TV show I would make the first season as if it was the last making it provoking all the way through.
No filler, or procedural episodes just getting to the main storyline and ending it with a satisfying ending leaving it open for another possible arc.

::sigh::
While I can’t say I’m entirely surprised, I’m most definitely disappointed. Shows these days are being given less and less time to develop characters and find their audience, not to mention less publicity by their networks. Personally, I think Caprica has had an intriguing premise from the start, and has only gotten better as the cast and production team settled into its world.
That said, I get why it might not appeal to a broad audience, thus leading to… less than encouraging ratings.
The thing I don’t understand is why they’re shelving the final episodes until the new year. If there won’t be any more, so why not just keep airing them until they’re done? According to the schedule bot, they’re just replacing it with syndicated episodes of TNG, which can’t bring in bigger ratings for sweeps month than Caprica would, renewal or not.
AndyMac says
“According to the schedule bot, they’re just replacing it with syndicated episodes of TNG”
Holy Frackin’ Felgercarb! I didn’t think I could get more pissed about this.
Summer Brooks says
Seriously? wtf… BBC America is airing TNG reruns already, as well as a few dozen locally syndicated stations.
Syfy, if you want to replace Caprica with reruns of something buried in your storage vaults, there are better options than dipping into the Star Trek well. Why not rerun first season eps of Eureka, or Sanctuary? Or go way back and air episodes of Invisible Man? You’re still airing episodes of Highlander and Charlie Jade in spots, and marathons of Firefly and Moonlight pop up from time to time. Who’s got syndication rights to air Babylon 5 these days, or has WB priced those higher than Friends?
This makes my head hurt. I really wanted to see where they went with Caprica, because the idea they started off with was sooooo damned close to the origin story I came up with in my essay in the “So Say We All” collection (you can buy the individual essays at Smart Pop Books, btw) 😉
If they don’t give it a decent closure on screen, maybe we’ll get a book trilogy to do the trick. I was never interested in the BSG novels (from the new series, anyway), but I would give Caprica novels a shot.
AndyMac says
@Keiran Halcyon: This nerd/geek buys a lot of things. Maybe they need a better choice of advertisers to appeal to us.
Sam says
@Summer: I agree with you. Hell, I would of liked to see them re-air B-5 or Farscape from season 1. I am able to already get my Trek fix 24/7 from just about anywhere.
