If you have been lurking on Fandango to get your tickets to an unrated screening of “Hatchet II,” you may want to close the browser window. The film won’t be showing in AMC theaters as previously reported.
The film failed to produce a cut that would get it an “R” rating and the theater chain won’t show it after all.
“I assume it probably had something to do with the controversy online about an unrated movie playing in theaters. To me, the whole thing is unfortunate because this is not a movie that deserves to be unrated. It’s a very funny, silly slasher movie about a swamp ghost that’s killing people in ridiculous ways. And now it’s become, you know, ‘Banned from cinemas.’ I’ve lost 11 pounds in the last week from stress,” says director Adam Green.
Green says the film’s removal from theaters shows the power the MPAA still has over films and their release. Green says that theater owners and AMC employees were looking forward to showing the sequel this Halloween season.
“It turns out the people who make the decisions at AMC were big fans of the original Hatchet and loved the sequel. I think the quote was that they thought it was the best slasher sequel they’d ever seen,” he tells EW.
Green says he and the distribution team aren’t deterred and are looking to get the unrated cut to fans. They are working to see the film released On Demand and DVD as quickly as possible to allow fans to vote with their money.
