Chloe Finally Coming to Superman Comics

In its decade long run, “Smallville” has brought over a lot of DC Universe regulars to meet and/or battle the Boy of Steel.

But there’s one character created for the show that hasn’t made the jump to the comic book page–Chloe Sullivan.

That’s all going to change when Action Comics #893 hits stands later this year. After a decade, Chloe will be in the comic book line.

Chloe’s first comic book appearance comes from writer Nick Spencer’s special Jimmy Olsen back-up feature.

“She’s a very successful and dedicated reporter and a major player in Metropolis,” Spencer told TV Guide of his take on Chloe, adding that “she’s the same dogged, funny and principled girl we’ve all come to love.”

Spencer acknowledged that it wasn’t easy finding a way to bring Chloe into the DC Universe due to the character’s television origins.

“It’s a pretty different continuity, which I think has always been the challenging part of bringing Chloe into the DC Comics Universe,” he said. “She’s never existed in the comics before, so in order to make a part of Clark’s life when he was a teenager in ‘Smallville,’ you’d have to do it somewhat retroactively, and it would age Chloe as a character a lot, since Superman is well past that part of his life in the books.”

Somehow, Spencer managed to find a solution that works. In her “Action Comics” debut, Chloe will hang onto many of the traits that have defined her character on “Smallville,” including her romantic relationship with Jimmy.

“She and Jimmy have a previous relationship,” said Spencer, “and that causes him to embark on a huge adventure that takes him across space and alternate realities to prove something to himself and her.”

Chloe and the rest of the “Smallville” crew return Friday on the CW.

  1. Just have another one of those stupid crises that reset everything by merging various realities and spark some meaningless war between the superheroes. You can draft her from the Earth-5,000,000,000 and make her part of the giant retcon.

This is why I don't read the big-time comics. There are no real consequences or deaths, just temporary hiatuses. As such, I just enjoy the mythological ride.

No re-boot required to insert a minor character into the current Superman mythos.

And if you don't read the big-time comics, how can you enjoy the mythological ride? I call shenanigans.

  3. One does not need to read the comics to enjoy the mythology. All the comics add, in my opinion, is the nitty-gritty details.

No one really cares how Perseus got to the lair of the Gorgons. All that really matters is that he outwitted Medusa and cut her head off. Similarly, I don't care about various reboots and wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey. It's enough for me to understand Krypton blew up, prodigal son sent to Earth, grew up as a human, embraced his destiny, saved the frakking world time and again, died once but can't really be killed, love is his true weakness, etc, etc.

In other words, keep your shenanigans to yourself.
