As October approaches, so does a full slate of scary films.
But here’s something that may scare the MPAA.
Two unrated horror movies will be in theaters this October. And not just independent theaters but in the big-name chain theaters.
According to CinemaBlend, “Hatchet II” and “I Spit In Your Grave” will get unrated runs in the AMC chain of theaters. This would be one of the first times an unrated cut of a film has shown up in a major chain theater. Most chains tend to follow the MPAA and show films with the standard ratings of G, PG, PG-13 and R. (Many won’t show NC-17 films)
Unrated cuts of films are nothing new–they appear on DVD all the time. But it appears that horror films are giving the fans what they want the first time in the theater and not forcing them to wait for home theater.
Whether or not it’s successful remains to be seen. But it’s something to watch with interest as the films hit theaters the first two Fridays of October.
