BBC Confirms 13 Episodes of "Doctor Who" Next Year

The BBC picked up two series of the Steven Moffat led “Doctor Who” before series five began. Many of us assumed the series would run thirteen episodes since that’s been the model since the series returned in 2005.

The BBC confirmed this yesterday, saying we’ll get the thirteen regular season episodes plus a Christmas speical for series six.

The BBC also said that actor Matt Smith would be back for the full series, putting to rest any rumors about whether he’d leave the role after just one season. Of course, now the questions of whether he’ll leave after series six will ramp up.

“The last year has been extraordinary,” Moffat said about a schedule that had him splitting his time between ‘Doctor Who’ and his other BBC series, ‘Sherlock’. “I’ve had about four days off, and that includes Christmas day. I work every weekend, I get up early in the morning, I go to bed late at night. There is no way of balancing it.”

“It’s extraordinary, but it’s great fun too! Great fun, so long as it doesn’t kill me!”
