"Priest" Hopes to Avoid 3-D Woes

And now for a bit of 3-D rage.

Director Scott Stewart told the ComicCon crowd that he is working to avoid the issues that have plagued other movies converted to 3-D for his upcoming movie, “Priest.”

Stewart said he and Screen Gems are taking the conversion of the apocalyptic vampire movie “very seriously.”

“Some films have gotten into trouble for rushing it,” he said, no doubt referring to the much-maligned and high profile example of “Clash of the Titans.” He said the movie’s date had been pushed back to next year just to make it right. “It’s just slippery because the process takes a long time. We’re taking six months or more to do it.”

Stewart then made the announcement that Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of “Samurai Jack” and writer-director-producer of cartoon series “Star Wars: Clone Wars” and “Dexter’s Laboratory,” is directing an animated prologue for “Priest.”

“I wanted to create a platform for his genius to be on the big screen,” said Stewart, who brought Tartakovsky out on stage and unveiled a sneak peek of that still-in-progress opening.

Tartakovsky called making the prologue a fun learning curve. He had the leeway of showing decapitations and blood but he still wanted to do it “tastefully.” Usually animators are outsourced from Asia but Tartakovsky was allowed to hired from the U.S. He ended up bringing on some from Disney, including those that worked on “The Princess and the Frog” for sequences that saw hearts being stabbed.

“They were saying ‘Genndy, we’ve never done anything like that before,’” Tartakovsky recalled.
