Del Toro To Direct "Haunted Mansion"

Director Guillermo Del Toro created waves when he left the director’s seat for “The Hobbit.”

But his next project may raise a few eyebrows among fans.

Del Toro tells the Hollywood Reporter that his next project will be a big screen version of Disney’s popular “The Haunted Mansion” ride.

“It’s going to be a thrill ride for the whole family but it’s definitely going to be scary,” he said. “(Walt) Disney is one of the creators of some of the scariest images in my childhood. People forget that he not only made sweet images but also images of nightmare. We need to honor that side of the legacy.”

The movie will have no connection to the Eddie Murphy vehicle of the same name, even though it was based on the same ride.

Disney envisions the new movie as one that could scare up a wider audience than the original version did. And, of course, it could be a potential franchise for the studio.

“We want a scary movie that’s as scary as the ride. If you’re 11 years old, you can go on the ride but it’s still scary,” said Disney production head Sean Bailey. “Tonally we’re going to make a movie that is for families but is a fun and, at times, scary movie.”

I hated the Eddie Murphy version of this. Hopefully this is better made.

  2. So, they're rebooting this?

I know The House of Mouse hasn't got a creative bone in their three-fingered gloves, but what the hell about the first version tells them this is a good idea?

Great move Disney, whats next? I know, make a movie about the old People Mover ride. Yea, I remember riding that; I'm sure creating a plot won't be hard at all.

OK maybe Guillermo Del Toro can come up with something interesting.
